In NBL25 Round 21, Melbourne United is set to put up a strong defensive performance against Cairns Taipans, especially in light of their recent form struggles. Although United has experienced inconsistency throughout the season, they aim to secure a strategic win to boost their standing. Key players to watch include Melbourne's defense against Cairns' Jack McVeigh and Andrew Andrews' assist capabilities. While Cairns has nothing to lose, Melbourne needs a win to avoid an elimination final against Tasmania. Look for United to cover the line as away favorites.

Cairns Taipans vs Melbourne United NBL25 Round 21 Expert Tips

Melbourne United will pick up their game when it matters, putting in a strong defensive performance against Cairns to cover the line as the away favourite.

It has been an unfamiliar season for United who have swung in form curves all season long, including the last few rounds. They come into this match against Cairns on the back of two consecutive losses and will need to turn the curve in the final two matches of the season, trying to gain a second chance in the play-in by finishing in fourth and avoiding an elimination final against Tasmania.

The Taipans got the better of Melbourne in the latest clash but with nothing left to play for after avoiding the spoon with victory over Brisbane on the weekend, I weight ‘the moment’ with substance and it is United that need to come up big.

Over the last month Melbourne’s defence point them back in contention and are definitely at their best when playing Dean Vickerman’s defensive-style of game. I expect them to go after Jack McVeigh, slowing down the Taipans’s marquee scorer forcing assist king, Andrew Andrews to find other scorers to keep Cairns in the match.

Andrews will find his dimes while McVeigh will be held once again under 22.5 points against United, who will kick away as teams do on the Taipans.

  • Melbourne have won 4 of their last 5 against the Taipans and their last 2 games played in Cairns.
  • Cairns have an average losing margin of 20.6 points this season.
  • Jack McVeigh has scored under 22.5 points in 4 of his last 5 and in both games he has played against Melbourne United this season.
  • Andrew Andrews has had 7+ assists in 7 of his last 8 matches

Cairns Taipans Form & Team News

Cairns snagged another victory and have now guaranteed that bigger brother Brisbane will be handed the wooden spoon at the end of NBL26 after beating the Bullets 81-72 last Sunday.

After another tough season dealing with injury the win in the Sunshine Stoush was a big one for Adam Forde and his men avoiding a second consecutive last-placed finish. The Taipans spent up big but came up short with their depth being tested all year.

Looking ahead, another full rebuild is likely on the way as one would expect that million dollar man Jack McVeigh will likely have one more crack at the NBA which will open up a mountain of cash, if it is spent, that is another story.

Melbourne United Form & Team News

United’s flurry of three victories was snapped heavily with two consecutive losses which has now put them in a tough spot trying to avoid the elimination Play-In Final against Tasmania if they are to qualify fifth, which is where they sit heading into Round 21.

Melbourne followed up their devastating loss to the Breakers with another poor performance against Adelaide in Round 20. United were dominated in the paint by the 36ers bigs shooting at just 41.9% from two-point range and 35.8% from the field. Defensively they gave a career-best night to Nick Rakocevic (20 points) and also allowed Zylan Cheatham (19 points) to have his way.

United simply appear off the pace heading into the finals compared to the top three teams in the competition, however, Dean Vickerman knows how to rally his troops in the postseason so it may not be time yet to rule them out.
