It may not have been pretty but the 36ers went 2-0 in Round 9, getting a dominant win against the JackJumpers 97-86, despite a sloppy fourth quarter and needing overtime to get past the Taipans 105-101.
Mike Wells will be pleased with Adelaide’s second position on the ladder with a 9-3 record, however, his team’s performance last round was far from being polished. A poor final quarter against the JackJumpers can be overlooked, considering they had a 25-point lead, however, letting a 10-point margin go in the fourth against the Taipans almost cost them a victory, relying on a 41-point performance from Bryce Cotton to dig them out of that hole.
Adelaide started the season as a top-two defensive team, but have leaned on their offence a little too much over the last few rounds. Lucky for the 36ers they have Cotton and even Zylan Cheatham to light up the scoreboard when points are needed. Cheatham has registered 3 double-doubles and is averaging 15.66 points and 10.5 assists in his last 6 games.

The Hawks were back and then they were not.
Two wins against Melbourne United and Cairns Taipans had the Sandbox pumping, however their first loss to Sydney in 7 matches brought them crashing back down to earth again. It wasn’t necessarily the loss but more so how, getting shut out offensively in a 98-71 loss.
The Hawks couldn’t unlock NBA champion JaVale McGee who was fouled out with 8:44 left in the game, scoring just 9 points in the match. Although Will Hickey continued his fine return with 19pts, 9reb and 8ass it wasn’t enough for Illawarra to compete.
The plan B for the Hawks is not working and the depth of their starting 5 is not enough to compete with the top teams in the competition at the moment, especially on the defensive end of the court where they rank last, giving up 96.5 points per game.
