The 2025-26 NBA season tips off on Tuesday, October 21 (US) with the Oklahoma City Thunder raising their banner at home against the Houston Rockets, where Kevin Durant makes his highly anticipated return. Later that night, Stephen Curry and the Warriors visit Luka Dončić and the Lakers, two teams with something to prove and plenty of firepower.

The league’s biggest showcase, Christmas Day, will feature five headline games: Cavaliers @ Knicks, Spurs @ Thunder, Rockets @ Lakers, Mavericks @ Warriors, and Timberwolves @ Nuggets, a schedule that captures the NBA’s past, present, and future in one day.

All-Star Weekend returns to Los Angeles from February 13-15, 2026, hosted at the Intuit Dome, the new home of the Clippers. The All-Star Game is set for February 15, before the stretch run toward the Playoffs, which begin Saturday, April 18, 2026.

The offseason was busy, reshaping both conferences. Power shifted slightly East, but the Thunder remain the team everyone’s chasing, according to both NBA.com’s Offseason Power Rankings and the annual GM Survey, which gave OKC a staggering 80% of the votes to repeat as champions.

The Western Conference: Thunder Reign & Rockets Rise

Contenders

The Oklahoma City Thunder are coming off a historic season with 68 wins, a +12.7 net rating, and their first championship as the youngest team to ever do it. Their dominance wasn’t just about wins; they outscored opponents by 1,243 total points across regular season and playoffs, the biggest cumulative differential in NBA history. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leads the way again, with Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams both still ascending. Continuity is their secret weapon: 95% of last season’s minutes are back.

Challenging them are the Denver Nuggets, who quietly reloaded. Nikola Jokić remains the league’s most unguardable big, and new additions Cam Johnson and Jonas Valančiūnas give Denver much-needed depth when Jokić rests, a weakness that’s haunted them for years.

The Houston Rockets are the biggest wild card. Adding Kevin Durant, Clint Capela, and Dorian Finney-Smith turning a promising young core into a legitimate contender. Houston were already a top-five defensive side; now they have one of the greatest scorers ever to fix their late-game offense. If the chemistry works, they’ll be a handful by April.

And don’t sleep on Minnesota, who play every game like a fist fight. Anthony Edwards is evolving into a superstar on both ends, and their starting lineup led all playoff teams in defensive rating.

Also-Rans & Wildcards

The Lakers are fascinating but fragile, Luka Dončić and LeBron James shared the floor in 742 minutes last year and were outscored in those minutes. Can LeBron adapt into a true off-ball threat and let Luka steer the ship? New arrival Deandre Ayton could provide the rim protection they’ve lacked.

The Clippers, armed with Bradley Beal, Brook Lopez, and Chris Paul, are the NBA’s most experienced roster. Depth won’t be an issue, durability might.

Further down, Golden State have work to do after losing Kevon Looney and juggling Jimmy Butler’s limited minutes. The Mavericks will rely heavily on rookie Cooper Flagg, who GMs unanimously tipped as Rookie of the Year (97%) and the best player five years from now (93%).

Then there’s San Antonio, where Victor Wembanyama, voted by GMs as both the league’s best defender and best interior defender, looks ready to drag the Spurs back toward relevance. If he and De’Aaron Fox can mesh, the leap might come sooner than expected.

The Eastern Conference: Cavs and Knicks Lead the Pack

Contenders

In the East, Cleveland enter as clear favourites after a 64-win season and the league’s top offense (121.0 points per 100 possessions). Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley, and Darius Garland headline a deep, balanced team that now adds Lonzo Ball and Larry Nance Jr. for extra defense and transition pace. The only question, can they tighten up enough defensively to survive in June?

Right behind them sit the New York Knicks, steady and physical as ever. They bring back their full starting lineup and swap Tom Thibodeau for Mike Brown, hoping his motion offense unlocks more ball movement around Jalen Brunson. Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby give them two of the best corner-three weapons in the league, and Madison Square Garden might host playoff basketball deep into May.

Orlando are this year’s dark horse. They already had a top-three defense in back-to-back seasons and now add Desmond Bane and Tyus Jones to ease the scoring load on Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. If Wagner’s shooting returns to form, this team can beat anyone.

Meanwhile, Detroit’s young core of Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and Ausar Thompson keeps improving. The Pistons jumped from bottom-five to playoff-ready in one season, and with more polish could challenge for a top-five seed.

Also-Rans & Rebuilders

Atlanta earned praise from GMs for their offseason, 53% called their moves the best of any team. Adding Kristaps Porziņģis could finally give Trae Young a rim-running anchor, though defensive limits remain.

Milwaukee start life without Damian Lillard, hoping Myles Turner’s rim protection reignites their defense. Giannis still holds the title of best power forward in the league (93%), but depth is thin.

Below them, Philadelphia are the league’s biggest mystery, a healthy Joel Embiid and Paul George could make them dangerous, but there are too many “ifs.” The Heat, Pacers, and Raptors round out the middle, each talented but flawed.

The Celtics, decimated by injuries and departures, enter a transition year after losing both Porziņģis and Holiday. Expect heavy reliance on threes and youth minutes.

And at the bottom? Charlotte, Washington, and Brooklyn are all banking on their kids in Brandon Miller, Alex Sarr, and Egor Demin, to show signs of life. They’re years away but important pieces in the NBA’s next generation.

Our Predictions

Western Conference Winner: Oklahoma City Thunder

The GMs say it (80%), and the numbers agree. OKC have the league’s most balanced roster, the best defense, and the continuity that wins playoff series. Holmgren’s rim protection and SGA’s calm in clutch time are already championship-proven. The only question is fatigue, but at 24-ish on average, the legs are young.

Eastern Conference Winner: Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland’s offense was elite, and their ball movement and pace jumped dramatically last year. With Lonzo Ball running, Mobley improving, and Donovan Mitchell squarely in his prime, they look a step ahead of New York and Orlando. If the defense cracks the top five, they’ll be back in the Finals for the first time since 2018.

NBA Champion: Oklahoma City Thunder

NBA Champion Dark Horse: Minnesota Timberwolves

The Timberwolves aren’t being talked about enough and that’s exactly why they’re dangerous. Anthony Edwards continues his leap toward superstardom, Karl-Anthony Towns is finally settled in his stretch-four role, and their defence remains elite after ranking top six in both offensive and defensive efficiency last season.

Their starting five outscored playoff opponents by 17 points per 100 possessions, the best mark of any lineup over the past three years. If Minnesota can stay healthy and get consistent bench scoring, they have the size, physicality, and defensive bite to trouble anyone, even the reigning champs.
