The Atlanta Hawks may not have the strongest roster, but they boast a young and talented team that could become a serious contender in the Eastern Conference in the coming years.

Currently holding a 4-5 record and sitting 10th in the East, the Hawks have been coping reasonably well despite being without their star player, Trae Young, who will remain sidelined for about three more weeks due to injury.

After a convincing win over the Orlando Magic, the Hawks fell in their last outing to the Toronto Raptors, 109-97. It was one of those nights where nothing went right - they committed too many turnovers, missed a ton of three-pointers, and even though the Raptors didn’t play great either, they managed to capitalize on Atlanta’s mistakes.

The Hawks shot an abysmal 34% from the field, and the decisive moment came in the final quarter, where they hit only 5 of 24 attempts.

The only bright spots were Jalen Johnson with 21 points and Nickeil Alexander-Walker with 20. On the other hand, Kristaps Porzingis, Dyson Daniels, and Onyeka Okongwu combined for a poor 8-for-38 shooting performance.

In addition to Trae Young’s injury, Luke Kennard also missed the last game due to illness, and his status for the Lakers matchup remains uncertain.

The Lakers have been performing far better than i expected early in the season. At the moment, only the reigning champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, hold a better record in the Western Conference, as the Lakers have registered seven wins and two losses.

This record is even more impressive considering LeBron James hasn’t played a single minute this season, while Luka Doncic has missed four games due to injury.

Luka returned in the previous game against the San Antonio Spurs and once again delivered a monstrous performance - 35 points, 9 rebounds, and 13 assists - leading his team to victory 118-116.

Deandre Ayton was also excellent, recording a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds, continuing his strong form in the absence of Austin Reaves, who has been playing the best basketball of his career this season.

Now, the Lakers face another tough challenge and a demanding stretch of games as they will be without two of their three key players. It’s still unclear how long Austin Reaves will be out with a groin injury, while LeBron James has yet to resume full training and is not expected to return anytime soon.

Last season, the teams met twice, each securing one win. The Hawks triumphed at home after overtime with a 134-132 victory.

Verdict

This will be a good test for the Hawks’ young players to see how much they’ve matured and developed recently. Clearly, their biggest challenge will be stopping Luka Doncic, and much of that responsibility will fall on Dyson Daniels, who has proven himself as one of the league’s best perimeter defenders.

It’s hard to imagine the Hawks repeating their poor shooting night from the Raptors game, and if they can find some rhythm from beyond the arc, they have a solid chance to trouble and potentially upset the favored Lakers.
