Bayern Form & Team News

After five rounds of the new Euroleague season, Bayern sits in 16th place with a record of two wins and three losses.

It’s already noticeable that they will once again rely heavily on their home-court advantage, where they can trouble even much stronger opponents, while every away win will be considered a bonus.

In the previous round, Bayern suffered a convincing 88:73 loss in Istanbul against Fenerbahce.
The German team started well and even led by six points after the first quarter, but Fenerbahce soon took control and built a double-digit lead early in the second half.

One of Bayern’s key weapons, three-point shooting, completely failed them. They made only 5 of 21 attempts from beyond the arc, far too little to compete with the reigning European champions.

Xavier Rathan-Mayes, who was brought in to replace the scoring output of Carsen Edwards, has completely disappeared in recent games. Against Fenerbahce, he missed all seven of his shots from the field.

To strengthen their backcourt, Bayern quickly moved on the market and signed NBA veteran Spencer Dinwiddie, who should be a significant addition at this level of competition.

Olympiacos Form & Team News

One of the two biggest favorites to win the Euroleague, Olympiacos, has not looked convincing at the start of the season. They’ve been struggling due to injuries to several key perimeter players and have been winning games mostly on pure talent.

That was clearly visible in their last match against Maccabi Tel Aviv, where they pulled off a dramatic comeback win in the final three minutes.

It seemed the Greek champions were heading for their third loss of the season when the scoreboard showed 93:83 with only 90 seconds remaining, but Giorgios Bartzokas’ team, led by Nikola Milutinov and Sasha Vezenkov, managed to overturn the result and snatch a remarkable victory.

Both Milutinov and Vezenkov scored 23 points, with strong support from Tyler Dorsey, who added 18 points, most of them in the first half.

The good news for Olympiacos ahead of this match is the return of Evan Fournier, who missed the previous three Euroleague games due to injury. His comeback will bring a new dimension to their offense, take some playmaking burden off others, and allow key scorers to focus on their strengths.

Head to Head

In recent seasons, Bayern has not had much success against Olympiacos. Their last meeting ended in a dominant 112:69 victory for the Greek champions.

Verdict

Gordie Herbert deserves great respect for what he achieved with Bayern last season, but this year’s roster is clearly weaker. While the arrival of Spencer Dinwiddie could raise their level in the coming weeks, at this moment they lack the quality and consistency to truly challenge Olympiacos.

I expect the visitors to exploit Bayern’s weaknesses in the paint, reduce their fluctuations in play, and secure a fairly routine victory in this game.
