ASVEL have spent most of this season at the very bottom of the standings and will most likely remain there until the end of the competition, in what is very possibly their final season in the EuroLeague.
In the previous round, they suffered their 17th loss of the season. This time, Zalgiris were the better team, completely outclassing them in the LDLC Arena with a 96:77 win.
It was another very disappointing performance from the French side, who had virtually no chance against their opponent despite Zalgiris missing starting guard Nigel Williams-Goss.
Only in certain moments of the second quarter did ASVEL look like a competitive opponent, while for most of the game they were chasing a large deficit.
They were outplayed in almost every segment of the game, recording fewer rebounds and assists, more turnovers, and much poorer shooting percentages both from the field and from the free-throw line.
The only performances worth mentioning came from veterans Thomas Heurtel, who finished the game with 21 points and 6 assists, and Edwin Jackson, who added 12 points.
Barcelona Form & Team News
After the El Clasico debacle, Barcelona managed to bounce back with a win over the strong Dubai team, 91:89. It was their 15th victory in the competition, which moved them up to fifth place in the EuroLeague standings.
Barcelona were the more dominant team for most of the game and it seemed they would close it out comfortably when they held a double-digit lead entering the final quarter.
Dubai had other plans, as they played their best basketball in the last 10 minutes, and thanks to excellent offensive execution, took the lead after a three-pointer by Dwayne Bacon one minute before the end.
That was when Dario Brizuela stepped up, personally stopping the visitors momentum and restoring Barcelona lead with a series of key baskets.
In the final possession for Dubai, Barca survived a three-point attempt by Aleksa Avramovic, and the celebrations in the Blaugrana camp could begin.
Dario Brizuela shined with 25 points, Kevin Punter followed with 20, while Toko Shengelia scored 11 points and Joel Parra added 10.
Head to Head
Barca won the first meeting of the season against ASVEL. In the Blaugrana Arena, the final score was 88:78, with an excellent performance from Kevin Punter, who finished the game with 24 points and 7 assists.
Verdict
With the departure of Nando De Colo, ASVEL lost their best player, whose individual quality and experience could have delivered an occasional EuroLeague win for this team.
ASVEL no longer have any ambitions in this competition, and for Barcelona the only important thing is not to underestimate their opponent, who will play without any pressure.
That is the first and main condition for a road victory. If they meet it, a comfortable win for the visitors should not be in doubt.
