The Black Caviar Lightning Stakes will be the first Group 1 of the 2026 calendar year in Australia, with the 1000m sprint headlining the February 14 meeting at Flemington Racecourse.

Tentyris (barrier 7) shapes as a leading contender after impressing in his most recent spring appearance, when the Godolphin colt scored a stylish victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes. While the three-year-old was accepted for the Champions Sprint seven days later, he became fractious at the barriers and was subsequently scratched.

Giga Kick (barrier 6) won that renewal of the Champions Sprint and, after a lean period the previous season following injury, has returned to form with two wins from as many spring runs.

Beiwacht (barrier 3) was defeated four lengths by Tentyris in the Coolmore Stud Stakes; however, he was a dominant winner of The Golden Rose prior to that, running fast time when accounting for a strong lineup that included Tempted, Sixties and Autumn Boy.

The consistent Baraqiel (barrier 5) has recorded eight wins and four placings from 13 appearances, including a Group 1 breakthrough over this trip in the Moir Stakes last spring, although he is yet to win in three attempts down the Flemington straight.

From eight starts, My Gladiola (barrier 8) has recorded two wins and five placings, with one of those victories coming up the Flemington straight at Listed level in spring, followed by two straight-track seconds.

Black Caviar Lightning Winners

Run in mid-February, the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes is one of Melbourne’s premier sprint contests, showcasing elite speed over the 1000m down the famous Flemington straight.

Carrying a prize pool of $1 million, the Lightning is one of two Group 1 sprints staged at Flemington during the autumn carnival, alongside the Newmarket Handicap, and regularly attracts the nation’s leading short-course performers.

The race was formerly known as the Lightning Stakes before being renamed to honour the legendary Black Caviar, following her historic hat-trick of victories between 2011 and 2013.

Recent editions of the race have been claimed by Coolangatta in 2023, Imperatriz in 2024, and Skybird in 2025, underlining the event’s continued standing as a key early-season sprinting target.
