This season is slowly starting to resemble previous ones for Milano, when they failed to reach the EuroLeague playoffs.

Losses to Crvena Zvezda and Real Madrid have pushed them further away from the top 10, leaving them in 12th place with a record of 11 wins and 12 losses.

On Tuesday, Milano suffered a heavy road loss against Real Madrid, going down 106:77. The defeat was fully deserved, as they failed to match their favored opponent in any segment of the game.

Already in the first quarter they fell behind by double digits and conceded 30 points, making it clear very early which direction the game would take.

The hosts’ advantage kept growing thanks to excellent shooting and a very porous Milano defense, while the Italian side also lost the rebounding battle badly, finishing with 15 fewer rebounds than their opponent.

Marko Guduric, with 15 points, was the only Milano player in form, while the rest of the team’s key contributors completely underperformed.

Armoni Brooks, Zach LeDay, and Shavon Shields combined for just 27 points on poor shooting, going 11/30 from the field, while Lorenzo Brown also had a game to forget.

Zalgiris continue with strong performances and remain firmly in the fight for a playoff spot. In the first game of the EuroLeague double round, they were successful on the road against ASVEL.

They claimed a convincing 96:77 victory, which marked their sixth away win of the season.

Zalgiris left no room for surprises in this matchup. From the opening tip, they played their recognizable aggressive defense, while offensively they relied heavily on an in-form Moses Wright.

The reliable center opened the game with a quick seven points, and by the fifth minute Zalgiris already held a huge 15 point lead.

ASVEL managed to cut the deficit to a single possession near the end of the first half, but that was all they could manage. Zalgiris shifted into a higher gear at the start of the second half and quickly pulled away to an unassailable 20 point advantage.

Sylvain Francisco was the most efficient player for the visitors with 20 points, Moses Wright added 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Azuolas Tubelis also reached double figures with 14 points.

Interestingly, Milano have been more successful in their last two visits to Kaunas, but have lost their previous three home games against the Lithuanian side. The matchup from last season is still remembered, when Zalgiris completed a comeback after trailing by 27 points.

Verdict

Milano v Zalgiris

This is a critical game for Milano and their ambitions to reach the top 10. It is a direct clash with a rival in which there is no room for mistakes.

Leandro Bolmaro returns to the lineup after missing the previous game, which should bring more stability to the team’s organization. I also expect Milano’s key players not to repeat such a poor shooting performance as they did in Madrid.
