Lithuania once again showed why they are a basketball nation.

Without their most important player Rokas Jokubaitis, in front of around 11,000 fans at Xiaomi Arena, they managed to defeat hosts Latvia 88:79.

From the very first minute, they had a clear plan that they executed perfectly.

Although he holds the status of the team’s biggest star, Jonas Valanciunas played only 10 minutes due to tactical reasons, and that decision proved to be a masterstroke by coach Kurtinaitis and his staff.

The absolute hero from shadow for Lithuania was relatively unknown Braunschweig player Arnas Velicka, who delivered the game of his life with 21 points, 11 assists, and 5 rebounds.

Deividas Sirvydis also shined with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Azuolas Tubelis dominated with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds.

Greece Form & Team News


After their 84:79 win over Israel, Greece finally returned to the long-awaited EuroBasket semifinals.

Although the final score does not fully reflect it, Greece won this game quite comfortably.

As expected, Israel had no answers in the paint for the dominant Giannis Antetokounmpo.

The Milwaukee Bucks star scored 37 points with 10 rebounds and an outstanding shooting performance of 18/23 from the field. He toyed with defenders in every sense and was an unsolvable riddle.

The rest of the Greek team did not particularly impress, but they were fortunate that Giannis appeared in his best form.

Only veteran Kostas Sloukas managed to score in double digits with 11 points, while the team’s best shooter Tyler Dorsey had a poor outing with just 4 points.

Head to head


Eight years ago, these two national teams met in the EuroBasket Round of 16, and Greece came out on top with a 77:64 victory. Valanciunas on one side and Papanikolaou and Sloukas on the other were also part of that game.

Verdict

I have no doubt that Lithuania will prepare well for Giannis Antetokounmpo and that he will not get as many easy points in the paint as he did against Israel.

Both teams have shown during the tournament that they can adapt to different styles of play. I expect a tough game with lower three-point shooting percentages and plenty of half-court basketball with controlled offenses.
