So Suave landed his first Sydney win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, with James McDonald producing the Chris Waller-trained gelding at the right time after a soft run in transit.
The four-year-old settled in the box seat before finishing off strongly late, giving the stable further reward for the patience shown with the lightly raced stayer.
Wednesday’s result was the third win of So Suave’s career and continued his steady rise after a Cranbourne victory on March 27, which was followed by a second at Sandown and a fifth at Bendigo.
By Zed out of Opulence, So Suave is a full brother to the late Verry Elleegant, the 11-time Group 1 winner and 2021 Melbourne Cup heroine.
McDonald famously partnered Verry Elleegant in nine of her 11 Group 1 victories, making Wednesday’s success another notable link to the family’s celebrated staying story.
Purchased for $260,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, So Suave has taken time to put things together, but his recent consistency suggests the gelding is beginning to furnish into a genuine staying prospect.
While still well short of the heights reached by his celebrated sister, the lightly raced four-year-old is beginning to build an encouraging profile through the staying ranks.
