ASVEL Form & Team News
ASVEL had a mixed week in the Euroleague. After losing 80:72 in Milano, where some signs of progress were visible, they managed to finally win two days later and put an end to their losing streak. At LDLC Arena they defeated Partizan in a thrilling game that ended 88:87, bringing their record to 3-8, the same as Baskonia and Maccabi Tel Aviv.
ASVEL opened the game in fantastic fashion, leading 16:2 after just four minutes. Partizan quickly recovered and reduced the gap to 6 points by the end of the first quarter.
At the start of the second half, the home team once again built a double-digit lead, but the visitors responded once more.
The final quarter was a tight battle with several lead changes, and the key factor was ASVEL’s composure in the decisive moments.
The hero of the night was ASVEL’s small but fearless point guard Glynn Watson, who hit a tough contested jumper one minute before the end, and on the next possession knocked down a three-pointer that proved to be the game-winner.
Watson finished the game with 18 points, the same as Zach Seljaas. Veteran David Lighty had his best performance of the season with 16 points, while returning player Shaq Harrison provided an important spark with 12 points.
Monaco Form & Team News
Monaco still cannot find their usual rhythm, and the results show it at the start of this season. They currently sit at 6-5, holding the 9th position in the Euroleague standings.
Last week they suffered two losses in the double-round. First, Partizan beat them 78:76 in Belgrade Arena, and two days later Crvena Zvezda defeated them on the same floor 91:79.
There is plenty of frustration for coach Vassilis Spanoulis and his team, but realistically, Monaco did not do enough to deserve wins considering the inconsistent stretches they had in both games.
Against Crvena Zvezda, they were even considered favorites given the long injury list on the home side and the fact that Zvezda had just returned from a demanding trip to Dubai, yet Monaco still could not capitalize.
At the start of the second half it seemed Monaco would finally break the resistance of their exhausted opponent, but then came a complete collapse that they could not recover from.
Mike James was once again the top scorer with 18 points and 7 assists, although he took several questionable shots in crucial moments.
Elie Okobo followed with 16 points, and the only other player in double figures was Jaron Blossomgame with 11 points. Alpha Diallo struggled under tight defensive pressure, while Nikola Mirotic failed to replicate his strong performance from the game against Partizan.
Head to Head
Last season, Monaco won both Euroleague games against ASVEL. On this court, they took an 83:78 win with 20 points from Mike James.
Verdict
Two teams enter this game in completely different moods. ASVEL comes in full of confidence after their win over Partizan, while Monaco arrives under pressure after two straight losses.
The quality is clearly on the side of the visitors, but the home team will play with freedom and without pressure, and I expect them to offer strong resistance to the favorites.
