Caulfield Cup History
First run in 1879, the Caulfield Cup has grown into one of Australia’s great staying races and remains a cornerstone of the Melbourne Spring Carnival.
Traditionally staged on the third Saturday in October, the Group 1 headlines the final day of the three-day Caulfield Carnival and sits alongside the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup as one of the major races of the spring.
The 2026 Caulfield Cup carries $6 million in prizemoney, with $3.3 million awarded to the winner. Prizemoney is paid down to 18th place, reflecting the scale and significance of one of Australia’s richest staying contests.
Run over 2400m under handicap conditions, the race regularly attracts a strong mix of local and international stayers. Australian, New Zealand, Japanese, French and English-trained gallopers have all played prominent roles throughout its modern history.
The Caulfield Cup has also long been regarded as a key lead-up to the Melbourne Cup, with horses capable of winning both races in the same spring completing one of Australian racing’s most famous doubles.
Some of the sport’s greatest trainers and jockeys have built outstanding records in the race. Bart Cummings holds the training record with seven Caulfield Cup victories, while Scobie Breasley remains the most successful jockey with five wins.
Its honour roll features generations of elite stayers, while the race’s international profile has continued to grow as more overseas-trained contenders target Melbourne’s spring features.
Without A Fight won the 2023 edition before Duke De Sessa took out the race in 2024, with Half Yours adding his name to the honour roll in 2025.
