Novak Djokovic vs Matteo Berrettini Live Stream & Tips

Top seed and defending champion Novak Djokovic will attempt to win his third Wimbledon in a row when he takes on seventh- seeded Italian Matteo Berrettini in the Wimbledon Men’s Singles Final on Sunday, July 10. Djokovic is gunning for his sixth Wimbledon in total as well as what would be his 20th grand slam, equaling the totals achieved by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

As for Matteo Berrettini, the world no.9 is in his first slam final and is also the very first Italian - man or woman - to reach the Wimbledon singles final. What’s more, Berrettini isn’t just there to make up the numbers, and he comes armed with arguably the best serve and forehand seen at this year’s Wimbledon.

In their respective semifinals on Friday, Djokovic came through in three sets against Denis Shapovalov, beating the 22-year-old Canadian 10th seed 7-6, 7-5, 7-5. Shapovalov consistently wowed the crowd with his big serves and ability to hit winners off both forehand and backhand from seemingly anywhere on the court. However, he let himself down badly by throwing away his serve at crucial moments in each set.

Berrettini had faced his toughest test of the tournament in 16th seed Felix Auger Aliassime in the quarterfinals, eliminating the 20-year-old Canadian in four sets. On Saturday he took on 14th seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland, the man who had knocked out Roger Federer in straight sets in the quarterfinals. While not as tough a challenge as Auger Aliassime, the 6’5” Hurkacz managed to win the third set on a tiebreak before Berrettini triumphed 6-3, 6-0, 7-6, 6-4, firing down 22 aces and blasting 60 winners, the majority with his forehand.

Berrettini is something of a throwback to the era of Pete Sampras and Goran Ivanisevic, two players who thrived at Wimbledon thanks mainly to their phenomenal serving and devastating forehands. Because of those undoubted weapons, the simplicity of his game and the incredible focus and mental fortitude he has shown during this Wimbledon, I’m backing Matteo Berrettini to defeat Novak Djokovic in four sets on Sunday to lift the men’s singles trophy.

Head to Head

Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini have faced each other twice previously, with Djokovic winning both. They first played each other in a round-robin match at the ATP World Tour Finals in London in 2019, where Djokovic won easily 6-2, 6-1. Their other match took place more recently at the French Open, with Djokovic winning in four sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-7, 7-5.

Novak Djokovic Form

Djokovic remains something of a conundrum; he doesn’t appear to have any outstanding shot or do anything particularly better than everybody else, he just does everything to a high level. What’s more, he rarely takes risks, rarely goes for winners and avoids going for the lines. His main goal in a match would seem to be to get the ball back one more time that his opponent.

Djokovic’s semifinal against Shapovalov was a perfect example of this. While the young Canadian constantly took risks, played big shots and went for winners, Djokovic was content to simply defend, leaving Shapovalov to either hit a winner or make an error. Djokovic dropped a set in his first round match against Britain Nick Draper, and has since won all of his subsequent five matches in straight sets. He’s as sharp as he can be.

Matteo Berrettini Form

Anyone who saw 25-year old Matteo Berrettini – in his tournament debut - power his way to the title at Queen’s Club three weeks ago were well aware they were watching a special talent, and one which was perfectly suited to grass. Therefore the natural assumption would be that Berrettini would be a genuine threat to win the men’s singles title at Wimbledon, and this has proved to be the case.

Berrettini is now just one match away from winning his first slam, with only defending champion and all-time great Novak Djokovic standing in his way. Can Berrettini do it? If he can stay as mentally strong and focused as he did defeating Felix Auger Aliassime and Hubert Hurkacz in his quarterfinal and semifinal matches, the answer is a resounding yes.

When Denis Shapovalov broke Novak Djokovic’s serve early in the first set of their semifinal, and proceeded to dominate the match with his ability to hit winners, it looked like an upset was on the cards. However, when it came to closing out the set, Shapovalov stumbled and Djokovic pounced. The same thing happened in each set, resulting in a straight sets victory for the defending champion.

We know that Matteo Berrettini has the big game trouble anybody on grass, but will he be able to perform with his usual focus when playing for the highest stakes of all against the best in the business?

I’m predicting that at 25-years-old and having spent the past two years in the world’s top 10, Berrettini is that bit more seasoned than Shapovalov, and will be able to hold his nerve long enough to get that done job done and defeat Djokovic in four sets.
