Sinner is the first Italian since 1973 to make three or more Grand Slam semi-finals in a single season, while Draper has blitzed his way into a first major semi-final and has nothing to lose here.

It's been a dominant season for Sinner, who has registered a 53-5 record and claimed his maiden major title at the Australian Open at the start of the season.

Sinner has won 35 of his 37 matches on hardcourt in 2024, also claiming the silverware in Rotterdam, Miami and the Cincinnati Masters just before arriving in New York.

Of course the doping controversy was a massive headline pre-tournament, but Sinner has brushed it all aside and is now the firm favourite for the title, with no other top 10 players remaining in the draw.

The Italian has only dropped two sets en route to his first US Open semi-final, defeating Mackenzie McDonald, Alex Michelsen, Chris O'Connell, Tommy Paul and Daniil Medvedev.

Sinner raised his level in a straight sets victory over Paul and locked in at the crucial moments to take down Medvedev in a topsy-turvy four-setter in the quarter-finals, prevailing 6-2 1-6 6-1 6-4.

What a breakout tournament for Draper, who has compiled a 30-17 record on the season, picking up his maiden ATP title on the lawns of Stuttgart.

Draper hasn't dropped a single set on his way to a maiden major semi-final, but it must also be stated that he's received a very kind draw.

Still, you can only beat whoever is in front of you and Draper has done his job marvellously, easing his way past Zhizhen Zhang, Facundo Diaz Acosta, Botic Van De Zandschulp, Tomas Machac and Alex de Minaur.

The Brit swept aside de Minaur by a 6-3 7-5 6-2 score, but even Draper admitted after the match that the Aussie was clearly not at 100 per cent following his struggles with a hip injury.

Draper is the first British man since Andy Murray in 2012 to make the US Open semi-finals.

Verdict

Jannik Sinner v Jack Draper

Excellent tournament for Draper, but it almost certainly comes to an end here. Apart from an injured de Minaur, the Brit hasn't faced anyone ranked higher than No. 39 in New York.

Sinner is obviously a considerable step up in class and the Italian has gone to another level in his last two wins over Paul and Medvedev. Expect Sinner to keep it rolling as he reaches a first US Open final.
