Novak Djokovic vs Matteo Berrettini Live Stream & Tips

Top seed and world no.1 Novak Djokovic will take on Italy’s big serving 9th seed Matteo Berrettini in the quarterfinals of the French Open on Wednesday, June 9. The winner of this match will play the winner of the game between defending champion Rafael Nadal and Diego Schwartzman in the semifinals.

Djokovic hadn’t dropped a set in this tournament before his fourth round match against another Italian, 19-year old Alejandro Musetti. Playing sensationally well, Musetti won the first two sets 7-6, 7-6 and looked set for a famous victory. However, following a “comfort break” Djokovic upped his level, while Musetti’s own standard dipped, and suddenly the next two sets had flashed by 1-6, 0-6, and at 0-4 down in the fifth the youngster quit, claiming fatigue.

Berrettini has lost just one set in his three wins, and was due to play Roger Federer in his fourth round match, but the Swiss icon suddenly withdrew from the tournament. The general consensus is after winning three matches and regaining some sharpness, Federer now wants to save himself for Wimbledon, which he considers his best shot at winning a 21st slam. Meanwhile Berrettini has had four days without a tennis match, far from ideal preparation for facing the world no.1.

Nevertheless, Matteo Berrettini is an excellent clay court player, and he has the weapons and big game overall to knock the robotic Novak Djokovic out of his stride, and I’m backing the Italian giant to win this match in four tight sets.

  • Djokovic world no.1
  • Djokovic 24-3 this year
  • Berrettini is world no.9
  • Berrettini is 22-5 this year

Head to Head

These two players have met just once before - at the 2019 ATP Finals in London in a round-robin match and on that occasion Novak Djokovic was the easy winner 6-2, 6-1. However, the ATP finals, come at the end of what is invariably a grueling season, and it is not unusual to see results like that. In reality that result bears little relevance to Wednesday’s game.

Novak Djokovic Form

With early exits from his first two events, Djokovic hadn’t been enjoying the European clay court season until the Italian Open, where he reached the final and lost a tough three set match to Rafael Nadal. Last week at Roland Garros, the top seed cruised through the first three rounds without the loss of a set, but then almost came a cropper against Italian sensation Lorenzo Musetti.

The 19-year-old won the first two sets 7-6, 7-6, but following a “toilet break” from Djokovic at the start of the third set, the match changed radically, and suddenly the Italian couldn’t win a game, losing 16 of the next 17 and then withdrawing from the match with the scoreline at 6-7, 6-7, 6-1, 6-0, 4-0 to Djokovic.

Matteo Berrettini Form

9th seed Berrettini came into this tournament in excellent form, winning the clay-court event in Belgrade and reaching the Madrid Masters final, where he lost to Alexander Zverev in three tight sets. At 6’5” and around 220 pounds, the Italian has a very similar game the great Argentinean Juan Martin Del Puerto, with a thunderous serve and a sledgehammer forehand.

Berrettini had cruised through his first three matches for the loss of just one set, and was due to play Roger Federer in the fourth round. However, the 20-time slam winner suddenly withdrew from Roland Garros, releasing this statement:

"After discussions with my team, I’ve decided I will need to pull out of Roland Garros today,” Federer wrote on Twitter. “After two knee surgeries and over a year of rehabilitation, it’s important that I listen to my body and make sure I don’t push myself too quickly on my road to recovery. I am thrilled to have gotten three matches under my belt. There is no greater feeling than being back on court.”

Verdict

For those players who rely on sharpness and rhythm, a four day break without a game could knock them out of their stride. However this shouldn’t be the case with Matteo Berrettini, who has two main weapons, a world-class serve and a devastating forehand, and doesn’t rely on much else to win matches.

The Italian is that rarity on the clay, somebody of immense size who serves big and yet moves excellently and has a real feel for the surface. I’m backing Berrettini to defeat Novak Djokovic in their quarterfinal on Wednesday, the Italian coming through in four exciting sets.
