Lorenzo Musetti vs Novak Djokovic Live Stream & Tips

Top seed Novak Djokovic will take on teen sensation Lorenzo Musetti in the fourth round of the French Open on Monday, June 7. After a shaky start to the European clay court swing, world no.1 Djokovic has rediscovered his form on the red dirt, reaching the final in Rome two weeks ago, and is looking as solid as ever in Paris.

Lorenzo Musetti is just one of eleven Italians currently in the ATP top-100 as his country enjoys an unprecedented tennis boom. While not the highest ranked Italian, Musetti is certainly the fastest rising, and since the start of 2020 he has climbed almost 300 places to his current ranking of 76, and could well finish the year inside the top-20.

Musetti showed us his potential in his third round victory over countryman Marco Cecchinato, himself a semifinalist at Roland Garros in 2018. Musetti came through 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, the kind of victory that will prove invaluable as he attempts to pull off the biggest win of his short career.

Meanwhile Djokovic has won all three of his matches in straight sets, losing no more than 4 games in any of the nine sets he’s won. It’s because of this lack of hard matchplay allied to Musetti’s youth, athleticism, speed and talent, I’m backing the Italian to defeat Djokovic in four sets on Monday.

  • Djokovic world no.1
  • Djokovic 14-3 on clay this year
  • Musetti is world no.76
  • Musetti 12-7 on clay this year

Head to Head

This will be the first ever meeting between Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti.

Lorenzo Musetti Form

Lorenzo Musetti first began grabbing the attention of hardcore tennis fans in 2018, when he made the quarterfinals at the junior events at the French Open and Wimbledon, and also reached the US Open Juniors final. In 2020, playing in only his second main draw on the ATP tour Musetti caused a stir when as a qualifier ranked 249 in the world he reached the last-16 of the Italian Open, defeating triple-slam winner Stan Wawrinka and US Open finalist Kei Nishikori on the way. A few weeks later Musetti reached the semifinals of the ATP 250 event in Sardinia.

In 2021 Musetti made a major breakthrough at the ATP 500 event in Acapulco, coming through the qualies then defeating Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov before losing to world no.5 Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-1, 6-3. Two months later and Musetti reached his second semifinal of the year and again lost to Tsitsipas, this time 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, with the Greek star full of praise for the youngster.

Novak Djokovic Form

Novak Djokovic ended 2020 at no.1 for a record sixth time, and began 2021 by winning a ninth Australian Open. However, the 34-year old Serb was subsequently beaten in his next three events; in Monte Carlo by the UK’s Dan Evans, by Aslan Karatsev in his hometown of Belgrade, and by arch-rival Rafa Nadal in the Italian Open final.

Djokovic finally managed to win an event – the second ATP 250 tournament staged in Belgrade – coming through a field of players largely from outside the top 100, including losing finalist Alex Molcan, ranked world no.255. Although Djokovic would later claim the event helped sharpen his game for Roland Garros, whether playing that level of player – or indeed any of his subsequent easy wins in Paris – has prepared him for what Lorenzo Musetti will bring to the party remains to be seen.

Although just 19, Lorenzo Musetti is 6’2”, athletically built, and hits his one-handed backhand with a similar potency to Tsitsipas. Musetti loves the clay, and as we saw in his match against Marco Cecchinato, he is quite happy to play flat out for five sets to earn a victory on the surface.
Musetti is also a great looking guy and an entertainer, two things that will endear him to the Paris crowd. As we know, Novak Djokovic is desperate to be loved by the fans, so if the majority of the crowd sides with the amiable Italian will it rattle the top-seed’s cage? Probably.
I’m backing Musetti to pull off a major upset on Monday by defeating Djokovic in four pulsating sets. All top players grab big scalps in their ascension, Musetti is destined to become a top player, and Djokovic will be his first big scalp.
