Daniil Medvedev vs Stefanos Tsitsipas Live Stream & Tips

No.2 seed Daniil Medvedev takes on fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals of the French Open on Tuesday, June 8. Both players have performed well in Paris over the past week, and while Tsitsipas enjoys playing on clay and always does well on the surface, Medvedev in general is not a fan. However, the Russian has improved his clay-court game markedly at Roland Garros during his first four matches.

This will be the eighth meeting between Medvedev and Tsitsipas, with the Russian leading their head-to-head 6-1, including a victory on clay in 2019. However, since then Tsitsipas has come on literally in leaps and bounds and his game is well suited to the red dirt. This year alone, Tsitsipas has won clay-court titles in Monte Carlo and Lyon, and was runner-up to Rafael Nadal in Barcelona.

On Sunday both players came through their fourth round matches in straight sets - Medvedev defeated 22nd seed Chilean Cristian Garin 6-2, 6-1, 7-5, and Tsitsipas beat 12th seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 (pictured).

Despite the one sidedness of their head-to-head, I’m backing Tsitsipas to be way too much for Medvedev on Tuesday, and I’m picking the Greek juggernaut to power past his Russian nemesis in straight sets.

Head to Head

Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas have played each other seven times, with the score currently 6-1 in Medvedev’s favor. Medvedev defeated Tsitsipas three times in 2018, and twice more in 2019 before losing to him for the only time at the ATP Finals in London, where Tsitsipas won 7-6, 6-4. Earlier this year the two faced off in the semifinals of the Australian Open, with Medvedev winning relatively comfortably 6-4, 6-2, 7-5.

Daniil Medvedev Form

Much as he did in 2019 and 2020, 25-year-old Daniil Medvedev is once again having an incredible season, particularly on hard courts. He was a part of the Russian team that won the ATP Cup at the start of the year, and he then reached the final of the Australian Open - his first slam final - losing to Novak Djokovic. Soon after, Medvedev when is second title of 2021 with victory at the ATP event in Marseille.

However, when they ATP tour switched to the European clay, Medvedev’s form deserted him and he suffered early exits in Madrid and Rome. Medvedev declared that he “hated clay”, and that it was “dirty” and “got everywhere.” Medvedev may end up revising how he feels about the surface following his first week in Paris that saw him negotiate his way past four potentially tricky opponents for the loss of just one set.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form

22-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas is having what may turn out to be the best year of his career so far in 2021, and he is in the kind of form that could lead to both grand slam success and top-three world ranking. Focusing purely on his clay-court exploits, Tsitsipas began his campaign with victory at the iconic Monte Carlo Masters, defeating Andre Rublev in straight sets in the final.

A week later Tsitsipas contested the final in Barcelona, and although he lost to Rafael Nadal, the match was a three hour 30 minute epic and one of the best of the year. Prior to the French Open, Tsitsipas won his second title of 2021, defeating Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the final of the ATP event in Lyon.

Despite Daniil Medvedev’s 6-1 lead in their head-to-head, I’m backing Stefanos Tsitsipas to win impressively on Tuesday. While the Russian has been playing better in Paris, none of the opponents he has faced is in the same league on clay as Tsitsipas, who right now is second only to Rafael Nadal on the surface.

I’m predicting Tsitsipas will win this match in straight sets, reaching his third grand slam semifinal, and second of 2021.
