Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Matteo Berrettini Tips

It will be a battle of two of the most talented young giants in tennis on Monday when 5th seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece takes on the no.9 seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy for a place in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.

These are two of the most popular new faces on the tour, both are showmen with crowd pleasing styles, and this could be the match of the tournament so far.

I’m picking Tsitsipas to win in five sets, based off his more complete game and greater mobility. Berrettini has massive power with his serve and forehand, less so with his backhand. The 6’6” Tsitsipas has no such weakness, and his one-handed backhand is already up there with those of Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem.

However, when Berrettini is serving well he is virtually unbreakable, so it stands to reason that he will win a set or two.

  • Tsitsipas reached semis in 2019 Australian Open
  • Tsitsipas semifinalist at Roland Garros last year
  • Berrettini reached semis at US Open in 2019
  • Berrettini has hit 51 aces in opening three matches

Head to Head

Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini have played each other only once on the ATP tour, in the first round of the Australian Open in 2019, and Tsitsipas was the winner in four sets. These two also faced each other in a 2017 US Open qualifying match, with Tsitsipas winning in three sets.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form

22-year old Tsitsipas opened his account in Melbourne with a straight-sets hammering of the normally ultra resilient Giles Simon. Sure, the Frenchman is 36 now, but I can’t recall the former world no.6 ever suffering a thrashing like the 6-1 6-2 6-1 handed out by Tsitsipas.

The no.5 seed didn’t have things his own way in his next match though; against a comebacking Thanasi Kokkinakis, Tsitsipas was forced to go the distance. The match was a thriller, with Aussie wildcard Kokkinakis - now fully recovered from the serious illness that sidelined him for a year - playing the best tennis of his career thus far, and giving hope that going forward he can finally live up to his huge potential.

Tsitsipas then brushed aside his third round opponent Mikael Ymer in straight sets 6-4 6-1 6-1 to set up this mouthwatering tie with the big-hitting Berrettini on Monday.

Matteo Berrettini Form

24-year old Berrettini chose to play in the ATP Cup as his warm up event, and even though he would lose to Daniil Medvedev in the final, he defeated Dominic Thiem, Gael Monfils and Roberto Bautista Agut – all in straight sets – to get there. Playing those matches against four top-ten ranked opponents is probably why Berrettini has hit the ground running in Melbourne.

The hulking Berrettini is 6’4” and 210 lbs, and he clobbers the ball like the heavyweight he is. His serve and forehand are among the biggest in tennis, and while his backhand is still a work in progress, it’s no longer the “Achilles Heel” it once was.

Berrettini had cruised through his three opening matches for the loss of one set, and is looking as confident and as powerful as when he reached the semifinals at the 2019 US Open. In the third round on Friday, he avoided the potential banana-skin of dangerous 19th seeded Russian Karen Khachanov, winning7-6 7-6 7-6.

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch a Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Matteo Berrettini live stream

Tsitsipas is one of the very few people capable of stopping Berrettini in the form he’s in. The Italian could have won this tournament – if he didn’t have to deal with Tsitsipas. However, he does, and while Berrettini will push him all the way, Tsitsipas will emerge victorious after five sets.
Why 5 sets? Because with a serve like Berrettini’s – and that of Tsitsipas for that matter – there are going to be tiebreaks, which can easily be converted into sets.
