Stan Wawrinka vs Marton Fucsovics Tips
The 35-year old Stan Wawrinka – the winner here in 2014 – continues his comeback from major knee surgery. One of the most popular players on the tour, the heavy-hitting “Stanimal” looked tremendous defeating Pedro Sousa in straight sets on Monday.
World no.55 Marton Fucsovics of Hungary needed five sets and more than four hours to overcome Aussie wild card Marc Polmans on Monday.
I’m picking 17th seed Wawrinka to outlast Hungary’s “Iron Man” over four hard-fought sets in the Australian Open second round on Wednesday.

Head to Head
Wawrinka and Fucsovics have played each other on four occasions. Wawrinka leads their head to head 3-1.
They faced each other three times in 2018 and most recently on 2019. Fucsovics won their first meeting – on clay in Geneva – and Wawrinka has won all three since, all Masters Series events on North American hard courts in Canada, Cincinnati and Indian Wells.
Stan Wawrinka’s Form
After winning three grand slam events – the Australian Open in 2014, French Open in 2015 and the US Open in 2016 – Wawrinka suffered a serious knee injury in 2017 that required major surgery.
The subsequent rehabilitation and slow return to form has taken three years, but at last he looks back to his old self.
Granted, Pedro Sousa was the perfect opponent to begin his Australian Open campaign; the Portuguese player stood and traded bombs from the baseline with one of the heaviest hitters in tennis history.
Everything was on point for the Swiss star, his jackknife serve was full of snap, his forehand was a bazooka, and that famed one-handed backhand was on fire. Wawrinka moved like a man a decade younger than 35, and looks to be in phenomenal shape.
Warwick won two matches at the Melbourne warm up event last week before withdrawing in the quarterfinals. Despite the lack of matches under his belt, he is looking remarkably sharp, and could go deep in this tournament.
Marton Fucsovics Form
Fucsovics is the most successful Hungarian player to compete on the ATP tour, and the only one to win an ATP tour event. The 28-year old is renowned for his strength and fitness, and he is a self-confessed “gym rat”.
Fucsovics played two matches at last week’s Melboune warm up event, and had the benefit of a hard five-set, four hour-plus match on Monday against Marc Polmans which will have helped his sharpness immensely.
Despite Covid-19 decimating the ATP calendar, Fucsovics still managed to play 25 matches last season, reaching the quarterfinals in Doha, and the last-16 at the Australian Open, the Cincinnati Masters and Roland Garros.

Verdict
Marton Fucsovics is a solid baseliner who will run and defend all day long but lacks the power in his shots to hit winners consistently. Stan Wawrinka, on the other hand, is blessed with freakish power and can hit winners from anywhere on the court.
The result will be an exciting match full of long rallies and heavy hitting. I’m picking Wawrinka to emerge victorious in four sets.
