Sofia Kenin vs Kaia Kanepi Tips

The 4th seed Sofia Kenin takes on 35-year Finnish veteran Kaia Kanepi in the second round of the Australian Open on Thursday. World no.65 Kanepi surprised many by winning through to the final of last week’s Melbourne 2 warm up event.

Kanepi is coming off four good wins last week including a victory over world no. 7 Aryna Sabalenka. However, Kaia also won three events on the challenger tour late last year, so entered this event in better shape than most.

Sofia Kenin was heavily beaten by Garbine Muguruza last week, and struggled with her opening round opponent here in Melbourne, even crying at one point.

I see Kanepi the in-form defeating Kenin in straight sets on Thursday. The Finn is going great guns, while one gets the feeling that Kenin would rather be anywhere than Melbourne right now.

Head to Head

Sofia Kenin and Kaia Kanepi have played each other just once before, at the Rome Masters on clay back in 2018. On that occasion Kanepi emerged victorious over three sets, winning 2-6 6-2 6-2.

Although there may be a slight psychological edge in Kanepi’s favor, this result won’t have much bearing on Thursday’s game, as it was almost three years ago, and on a different, much slower surface.

Sofia Kenin’s Form

Last week Kenin had a three-set win over Jessica Pegula of the US in the first round of one of the Melbourne warm up event. Pegula defeated Victoria Azarenka in a major upset on Tuesday. Her next opponent Camila Giorgi of Italy withdrew after losing the opening set to Kenin.

She was then blown away 6-2 6-2 by Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in the quarterfinals. While not the best result, in fairness to Kenin, Muguruza can do that to anyone on her day – Serena Williams included.

Sofia subsequently made a nervy start to the defence of her Australian Open title, winning 7-5 6-4 over 116-ranked Madison Inglis. Kenin was in tears at one point, but she plays with her heart on her sleeve at the best of times.

Kaia Kanepi’s Form

Kaia Kanepi played exceptionally well in powering her way through to the Melbourne 2 final at the age of 35. The former world no.15 is currently ranked 65th, but she is enjoying something of an Indian Summer in her career.

She ended 2020 with three wins on the ITF tour, and after losing in the second round at Roland Garros she went 15-1 in matches. Kaia has simply continued that great run of form into 2021, and she could yet go deep in the first slam of the season.

Our live streaming calendar shows you where you can watch the Sofia Kenin vs Kaia Kanepi live stream.

Sofia Kenin is a mercurial talent, but unless she can learn to keep her emotions in check, she will struggle to fulfil her enormous potential. She is a great front runner, and when she is on form and hitting the ball well she is almost unstoppable, however when things don’t go her way she quickly falls to pieces.
Kaia Kanepi is playing some of the best tennis of her career right now. She is a big, hard hitting player, and she will be way too experienced and level headed not to take full advantage of a vulnerable champion who clearly wants to go home. Kanepi to win in straight sets.
