Novak Djokovic vs Taylor Fritz Tips

  • Djokovic is the world no.1
  • Djokovic is chasing a record ninth Australian Open trophy
  • Fritz is the 27th seed
  • Fritz is a former ITF Junior World No.1

Novak Djokovic continues his quest for a ninth Australian Open and 19th slam with a third round matchup against the rising American prospect, 27th seed Taylor Fritz. Djokovic needs little introduction and anyone who follows tennis knows that Novak is headed for the tennis Hall of Fame, and could even finish his career rated as the GOAT by some.

The 23-year old Taylor Fritz is a former junior world no.1, and considered by many to the best US prospect since Andy Roddick. Fritz is 6’4” but moves very well, has excellent groundstrokes off both flanks and serves bombs.

Thus far in Melbourne Taylor has beaten a Spanish baseliner and an American service machine in his first two matches, and I feel he has the game to trouble Djokovic, who looked less than stellar in his second round match against another rising American.

That is why I’m picking Fritz to push Djokovic to five sets. Taylor may even pull off an upset, he’s certainly capable of it, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves.

Head to Head

Novak Djokovic and Taylor Fritz have played each other twice before, with Djokovic wining both matches in straight sets. Both meeting were on clay during the 2019 European clay court season.

The first was at the Monte Carlo Masters where Djokovic won 6-3 6-0, and the second was at the Madrid Masters, with Fritz going down by a more respectable 6-4 6-2.

Fritz was just 20 at that time, and both of those meetings were on clay, so those results won’t have much influence on Friday’s match.

Novak Djokovic Form

Djokovic began the defense of his Australian Open title with an emphatic straight-sets thrashing of Jeremy Chardy of France 6-3 6-1 6-2. However in his next match, a first time meeting with another 23-year old American Frances Tiafoe, he almost came a cropper.

Had Tiafoe had a little more luck in the third set tiebreak, it could have been him taking on Taylor Fritz in the third round. After overcoming Tiafoe 6-3 6-7 7-6 6-3 Djokovic was full of praise for his opponent:

“It was a very tough match, very warm and a lot of long rallies," Djokovic said on court. "I want to say that Frances put up a really good fight. The matches are only going to get tougher. I was fortunate to get through the third set today. It was anyone’s game and Frances served great."

Taylor Fritz Form

In his first round match Fritz defeated Spanish veteran Albert Ramos Vinolas in four sets 7-6 3-6 6-2 7-6. Vinolas is a former world no.17 who has reached eight finals on the ATP tour, all on clay, winning two. The fact that Fritz was happy to rally with Vinolas and come out on top speaks volumes for his all-round game.

Next came a very different opponent in 6’11” fellow American Reilly Opelka, the heir to Ivo Karlovic’s role as tallest player on the tour. Opelka consistently hammers his serves down at 140 mph, and moves quite well for such a giant, but Fritz prevailed, coming from behind to win 4-6 7-6 6-7 7-6 6-2. Next up comes a third round meeting with world no.1 and defending champion Djokovic. Says Fritz:

“It's Novak. And it's Novak here at the Australian Open, but for me, I'm just going to have to play my best tennis. Luckily for me and my game, I possess the ability if I'm on, I can serve well enough to where I won't get broken and I can be extremely aggressive on the groundstrokes and I can take control if I'm on. I just have to do everything I possibly can in the next couple [of] days to give myself the best chance of playing my best tennis.”

Verdict

Taylor Fritz has the game to defeat anybody on his day, all he lacks is the self belief and that “do-or-die” spirit that the truly great players all have.

It remains to be seen if he does indeed upset the champion, but I feel he is certainly good enough to push the champion to five exciting sets, and If you are feeling brave, you'll get 16-1 on Fritz to win.
