Novak Djokovic vs Nishesh Basavareddy Tips, Prediction & Live Stream

An intriguing opening round Australian Open clash awaits on Monday night when 10-time champion Novak Djokovic launches is campaign against rising teenage star Nishesh Basavareddy.

Basavareddy has improved his ranking over 300 spots over the last 12 months and is backed to cover a big +8.5 games line against Djokovic, who's level has undoubtedly regressed over the last year. Coming off a big run to the Auckland semi-finals last week, Basavareddy has the ability to catch Djokovic off guard in his first ever match at the Australian Open and sneak a set.

Head To Head

This will be the first career meeting between the pair.

Novak Djokovic Form

For the first time in over a decade, Djokovic isn't expected to go all the way at the Australian Open. The Serbian has a ridiculous 94-9 record at Melbourne Park, winning a record 10 titles, but he's coming off a difficult 2024 season and appears to have fallen back to the pack.

Djokovic failed to win a regular ATP title or Grand Slam for the first time since 2005, causing him to drop down to No. 7 in the current rankings - although he did lift when it mattered most, finally securing an Olympic Gold medal with a stunning victory over Carlos Alcaraz, which basically saw the 38-year-old complete tennis.

You've got to wonder if Djokovic can lift mentally as well as physically having achieved all there is to in the sport, but hiring Andy Murray as coach for the Aussie summer shows he's still thinking outside the box and motivated to return to Grand Slam glory.

Djokovic didn't have the best preparation for the Australian Open, beating Rinky Hijikata and Gael Monfils before going down in straight sets to Reilly Opelka in the Brisbane quarter-finals.

Nishesh Basavareddy Form

What a moment this is for Basavareddy - he was ranked outside the world's top 450 at this stage last year, but now he gets to face his idol and 10-time Australian Open champion on Rod Laver Arena in prime time.

Basavareddy won't be overawed though - the 19-year-old was extremely impressive during 2024 and is on the verge of cracking the top 100 at a current ranking of No. 107.

Having featured in six Challenger finals last year and winning two titles, Basavareddy qualified for the Next Gen ATP Finals, playing outside North American in a professional capacity for the first time.

Basavareddy is already making an impact to launch 2025, qualifying for the Brisbane main draw with wins over Borna Gojo and former Australian Open semi-finalist Lucas Pouille before making his first ATP semi-final in Auckland last week, knocking out defending champion Alejandro Tabilo and compatriot Alex Michelsen before going down to eventual champion Gael Monfils.

Verdict

Obviously can't look past Djokovic here, but I think Basavareddy can cause him some problems straight out the gate.

Djokovic has dropped sets against the likes of Dino Prizmic (another teenager), Enzo Couacoud and Jan-Lennard Struff in either the first or second round over the last few years at the AO, so it's not like he's blitzing lower-ranked players early, while he's certainly not the invincible player he once was.

Basavareddy's stock is on the rise and he's confident having won tons of matches over the last few months, along with reaching the Auckland semi-finals last week. I'm backing the teenager to cover a big +8.5 games line and I wouldn't be surprised if he took a set in the process.
