It's a blockbuster showdown inside John Cain Arena on Monday night as Nick Kyrgios features at the Australian Open for the first time since 2022 when he comes up against Jacob Fearnley in the opening round.

A long, drawn-out affair totalling over 40.5 games is expected, with Kyrgios still rusty after playing just two matches since October 2022, while Fearnley - who won a total of 45 matches at all levels in a breakout 2024 season - is backed as the slight underdog in the H2H market.
Head To Head
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Nick Kyrgios Form
Not any form to really write about here - Kyrgios hasn't won a match on tour since 2022 and has only featured twice since October 2022, including losing his only clash of the Australian summer in three tiebreaks in Brisbane against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.
In hindsight, it was the worst possible preparation for Kyrgios - he basically just copped aces from the giant-serving Mpetshi Perricard and barely got to test himself in extended baseline exchanges, although he did get a couple of matches with Novak Djokovic in the doubles.
Putting a winning Kyrgios return to Melbourne in further doubt is the Aussie declaring he picked up a grade 1 abdominal strain in Brisbane, which caused him to pull out of the exhibition matches last week.
Kyrgios is a former quarter-finalist at the Australian Open and will lift with the electric atmosphere inside John Cain Arena, but his fitness and overall level remains a mystery.
Jacob Fearnley Form
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland and a college standout for Texas University, Fearnley put together a breakout season in 2024, rising from outside the top 600 to inside the top 100, earning himself a maiden crack at the Australian Open main draw.
Fearnley made waves when he made the second round of Wimbledon on debut last year, taking a set off Novak Djokovic in the process.
The 23-year-old proceeded to win four Challenger titles over the course of the year, compiling an overall record of 45-9 at all levels.
Playing in Australia for the first time, Fearnley launched his 2025 season and first full year as a pro at the Canberra Challenger, where he made the semi-finals before going down to on-fire Next Gen ATP Finals champion Joao Fonseca.

Verdict
You never know what you're going to get with Kyrgios, but it's hard to back him with any sort of confidence here, even on his favourite court.
I am confident this match can exceed 40.5 total games - there'll likely be some tiebreaks with Kyrgios' huge serve and poor return, while I can't see either player winning in straight sets.
Fearnley won't be overawed by the atmosphere having played college tennis in the States, so if the Scot can bring his 2024 form into this clash, he offers good value to prevail in a lengthy affair.
