I'm keen to fade Osaka in this matchup - she was forced to retire in the final of Auckland with an abdominal injury and her price has been inflated over the past year due to her past exploits, but in reality, she failed to win consecutive matches at 12 of 18 tournaments last year. Garcia beat Osaka in the opening round of the AO last year and scored another win over the Japanese in Miami - the Frenchwoman has all the value in this marquee opening round showdown.
Head To Head
Level at 2-2, with Garcia going 2-1 in 2024 alone. As mentioned, Garcia defeated Osaka at the Australian Open and Miami last season, while the Japanese did claim a victory in-between those tournaments in Doha.
Naomi Osaka Form
Understandably, Osaka has struggled in her comeback to tennis and remains languishing at No. 50 in the world after a full season in 2024.
Osaka has declared that she won't hang around tennis for much longer if her results don't improve and she fails to start going deeper at the slams, so it will be interesting to see how she performs over the next six months or so.
It certainly wasn't an ideal start to 2025 for the four-time major champion - she battled her way into the Auckland final and was playing great in the title match against Clara Tauson, but she retired after winning the opening set with an abdominal injury.
Performing at the slams has been a struggle for Osaka, with the Japanese failing to make it past the third round since claiming her second Australian Open title in 2021.
Caroline Garcia Form
Garcia endured a tough 2024 season and decided to end her campaign shortly after the US Open as she battled a shoulder injury, while she also declared she was mentally burned out.
The Frenchwoman also opted not to play a warm-up tournament prior to the Australian Open, meaning this will be Garcia's first match since September 2024.
A former World No. 4 with some huge wins under her belt throughout her career, Garcia will be hoping she can hit the ground running and draw on the memories from her win over Osaka 12 months ago.
Garcia has a 27-7 record in the opening round of Grand Slams since 2016, so this looks like a great opportunity for a triumphant return.

Verdict
Can't justify Osaka as a $1.20 favourite here - she retired with a WTA title on the line in Auckland to start 2025 and failed to win back-to-back matches in 12 of her 18 tournaments in 2024.
Garcia defeated Osaka in two of their three meetings in 2024, including at the Australian Open, so the Frenchwoman is good value for another upset inside Rod Laver Arena.
