Jordan Thompson vs Casper Ruud Tips
I’m picking Thompson to outlast Ruud over five highly competitive sets. Whilst Ruud is the younger man at 22 and world ranked 27 (26-year old Thompson is ranked 52), the Aussie reached the 3rd round in Paris in November defeating Borna Coric along the way, and also won three matches in a warm up event this week.
By comparison, Ruud hasn’t won a match since Roland Garros in October.
- Jordan Thompson reached the 2nd round in Melbourne last two years
- Jordan Thompson has played three 5-setters in past 4 years in Melbourne
- Casper Ruud has won one main draw match in Melbourne in 4 attempts
- Casper Ruud has played two 5-setters in past three years in Melbourne
Head to Head
Jordan Thompson and Casper Ruud have played each other twice, both times in 2018, and the score is one win apiece. Ruud defeated Thompson over 5 sets at Roland Garros, but Thompson gained revenge later that year with a 3-set win in Calgary.
Jordan Thompson Form
The 6’ tall Thompson is a right hander with a two-handed backhand. He is primarily a baseliner, but thanks to regular doubles play is also a sound volleyer.
Largely due to the Covid restrictions, Thompson has been limited with the usual pre-Melbourne warm-up events. He did however reach the quarterfinals of the Great Ocean Road Open in Melbourne this week, winning three matches along the way.
Thompson’s 2020 season was highlighted by reaching the last-16 of the US Open, and the last-16 of the Paris Masters.
Casper Ruud Form
Ruud is also 6’, a right hander with a two-handed backhand. In fact these two play a very similar game.
Ruud played in the Murray River Open warm-up event in Melbourne last week, but was beaten in the opening round by Czech giant Jiri Vesely.
Ruud has had greater success on clay, and Vesely’s game is suited to hard courts, but Casper still pushed him to three hard sets before going out.
Ruud’s 2020 season was highlighted by winning his first ATP title, the clay court event in Buenos Aires, and also reaching the final in Santiago, Chile, also on clay.
He became the first Norwegian tennis player to claim an ATP title.

Verdict
Both men play a very similar game, with the lighter Ruud slightly quicker about the court, and Thompson with the bigger serve and more overall power. The difference will be that Thompson won three matches last week, while Ruud lost one.
The Aussie has also won his opening match three times in the past four years in Melbourne, while Casper’s only win came in 2018, a five-set victory over a player ranked 134 in the world.
Also, the Aussie crowd - even if it is limited in size – will surely get behind the affable Thompson.
While I’m picking Thompson to win, I’m also picking this to go five sets, because Ruud won’t go down without a fight, and Jordan doesn’t have the power to end it quick. Between them they’ve already appeared in five 5-setters in Melbourne, Monday’s match will make it six.
