Fonseca is the talk of the tennis world and for good reason - the 18-year-old demolished ninth seed Andrey Rublev in straight sets in his Grand Slam debut, bringing his winning streak dating back to the Next Gen ATP Finals to a total of 14 matches. The Brazilian is a generational talent and already equipped with one of the most thunderous forehands in the game. What's more, Fonseca already owns a straight sets win over Sonego from last year - and he's a much stronger player today. Back Fonseca in for another straight sets victory, with Sonego currently on a run of going 10 consecutive tournaments without making it beyond the second round.
Head To Head
Fonseca leads 1-0, defeating Sonego 7-6 7-5 in the opening round of Bucharest in 2024.
Joao Fonseca Form
Fonseca lit up Margaret Court Arena in his first ever main draw match at a major on Tuesday, absolutely dominating ninth seed Andrey Rublev from start to finish.
It was one of the most impressive Grand Slam debuts in history, with Fonseca blasting 51 winners to just 32 unforced errors in the 7-6 6-3 7-6 triumph. The 18-year-old is only the second teenager since 1973 to defeat a top 10 opponent in their Grand Slam debut.
However, while this might have been a shock to casual fans, to keen tennis observers, this was almost expected. Fonseca became the first player born in 2006 to win a tour-level match in February 2024 when he conquered Arthur Fils (now a top 20 player) in the opening round of the 500-even in Rio de Janeiro, while he took his game to another level towards the end of last year.
Indeed, Fonseca joined Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner as an 18-year-old winner of the Next Gen ATP Finals before going on to win the Canberra Challenger and qualifying for the Australian Open, barely dropping games, let alone sets.
Lorenzo Sonego Form
Sonego is experiencing a huge contrast of opponents across his opening two rounds after defeating 39-year-old former Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka on Tuesday.
The Italian produced a great performance to emerge triumphant by a 6-4 5-7 7-5 7-5 scoreline, striking 63 winners and converting four of five break points.
However, Sonego has really struggled for consistency and stringing together back-to-back wins lately, failing to go past the second round in his last 10 tournaments - including R2 exits in Hong Kong and Auckland to launch his 2025 season.
Additionally, Sonego has a poor 1-4 record in the second round of the Australian Open.

Verdict
Part of me thinks Sonego offers good value as it wouldn't be surprising if Fonseca suffered a bit of a letdown after such a monumental breakout performance two night ago.
But, on the other hand, Fonseca is just built different. He's a special talent and barring injury, I'd be shocked if he didn't finish this year inside the top 30 at the very least. I'm going all in on the Brazilian and backing him in for his 10th straight sets victory of 2025.
