Dominic Thiem vs Nick Kyrgios Tips

Third seed Dominic Thiem of Austria, many experts’ pick to win here in Melbourne this year, faces a tricky third round match in the form of local icon Nick Kyrgios. While Thiem is the lowest of low profile off the court yet always gives 110% on it, Kyrgios is the total opposite.

Nick is rarely out of the news for something he has said or done both on and off the court, and has been accused of not trying and even “tanking” in matches. However, when focused Kyrgios is an outrageous talent. He has it all – huge size yet excellent mobility, massive power off both flanks yet a delicate touch around the net, and arguably the best serve in men’s tennis today.

It is a fair reflection of Nick’s lack of focus and disregard of that talent that he often languishes well outside the top-20 (he’s currently 47). 25-year old Kyrgios has won six ATP tour titles, and has beaten almost every top player, Nadal, Federer and Djokovic included.

I’m picking Kyrgios to upset the odds and knock Thiem out of the tournament with a four-set victory on Friday.

  • Thiem is the current world no.3
  • Thiem reached the final here in Melbourne last year
  • Kyrgios won 5-set thriller on Wednesday
  • Kyrgios is an excellent “big match” player

Head to Head

Kyrgios and Thiem have met each other only once before, back in 2015 at an event in Nice, France, and Kyrgios retired injured with the score at 4-3 to Thiem in the first set.

So in reality, Friday's match will be the first genuine game between the pair.

Dominic Thiem Form

Thiem has won both of his matches in Melbourne in straights sets, and looked his usual potent self. Thiem has one setting – clobber the ball as hard as he can, and do that all match long. Novak Djokovic has said that playing Thiem is as mentally exhausting as it is physical, because his opponents never gets the chance to relax because of the constant barrage of heavy artillery coming their way.

Thiem has beaten Djokovic in 5 of their last seven meetings, and was expected to defeat him in last year’s Aussie Open final. Despite Thiem taking a two sets to one lead, Djokovic prevailed over 5 sets.
After losing in three slam finals, Thiem won his first major last year when he took the US Open, outlasting his best friend on the tour Sascha Zverev over 5 grueling sets. Thiem then ended the year reaching another final at the ATP Tour Finals in London, losing to Daniil Medvedev in another thriller.

Nick Kyrgios Form

Kyrgios played just nine games last year before sustaining a meniscus tear in his knee that required surgery and ended his tennis season. Nick had shown signs of great things to come at the Aussie Open that year, defeating Karen Khachanov over five brutal sets (4 tiebreakers) and then bowing out against Rafa Nadal in four sets, giving the top seed a real scare along the way. Then two weeks later it was all over, retiring injured in Doha against Ugo Humbert, and then discovering the extent of his injury.

Kyrgios has bounced back incredibly well at this year’s Australian Open.  Nick won his opening match against Portugal’s Federico Silva in straights sets, then – as luck would have it – met the man he’d been playing when he suffered his injury, Ugo Humbert, the ultra-talented 22-year old French hope. Kyrgios was forced to play out of his skin, coming from behind and saving two set points to defeat Humbert in 5 sets.

Verdict

Kyrgios vs Thiem could well shape up to be the match of this year’s Australian Open. Thiem has no quit in him and will fight to the bitter end, and Kyrgios has proven many times that he is the player for the big occasion.

Nick will have to leave everything on the court to beat Thiem, but I feel at his best, he has more weapons, more options and more pure talent than Thiem.

I think for Nick, Friday’s match against Thiem is like his own “final”, and he’s going to go all to win, which he will do, in four exciting sets.
