Daniil Medvedev vs Stefanos Tsitsipas Tips
Two of the biggest and brightest young stars of men’s tennis meet for a place in the Australian Open final when Russia’s Daniil Medvedev takes on Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on Friday.
Both men have been in peak form during this tournament, and both registered impressive wins in the quarterfinals; Medvedev easily beating 7th seed and compatriot Andrey Rublev in straight sets, while Tsitsipas defeated 2nd seed and 20-time slam winner Rafael Nadal in an epic 5-setter.
Now the irresistible force that is Medvedev faces the immovable object that Tsitsipas has shown himself to be in Melbourne, and it’s tough to pick the winner. Nevertheless I’m going with Tsitsipas to soak up Medvedev’s pressure, serve big and out-battle his rival in another five-set war.
- Medvedev has won last 3 events contested
- Medvedev is on a 19-match winning streak
- Tsitsipas unbeaten in 2021
- Tsitsipas defeated Nadal on Wednesday
Head to Head
Daniil Medvedev leads the head to head with Stefanos Tsitsipas by 5 wins to 1. The Russian won three matches on hardcourts in 2018, and also defeated Tsitsipas twice in 2019, on clay in Monte Carlo and on a hard court at the Shanghai Masters.
Tsitsipas’s sole victory came at the ATP Finals in 2019. Tsitsipas defeated Medvedev 7-6 6-4 in a round robin match en-route to winning that title.
Daniil Medvedev Form
The 4th seed Daniil Medvedev has had things his own way so far in this tournament, apart from an unexpectedly tough 3rd round match against 28th seed Filip Krajinović of Serbia.
Medvedev won the first two sets 6-3 6-3 and looked set for an early finish, only for Krajinović to mount a stirring comeback and win the next two sets 6-4 6-3.
However the effort did for Krajinović in the fifth, leaving the inexhaustible Medvedev to run through it 6-0. In the quarterfinals Medvedev faced his closes friend and countryman Andrey Rublev.
Both men were unbeaten in 2021, and Rublev hadn’t dropped a set in Melbourne, but that all changed as Medvedev handled him comfortably, winning 7-5 6-3 6-2.
Stefanos Tsitsipas Form
The 5th seed Stefanos Tsitsipas served notice of his form in Melbourne right from the off, routing the usually resilient Giles Simon in straight sets for the loss of 4 games.
A surprisingly tough 5-set challenge from Aussie wildcard and crown favorite Thanasi Kokkinakis followed, with Tsitsipas coming through 6-7 6-4 6-1 6-7 6-4.
An easy straights sets win over Mikael Ymer was followed by a walkover of the injured Matteo Berrettini in the fourth round.
Next came Wednesday’s quarterfinal against 2nd seed and my pick for the title Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard led their head-to-head 6-1, and had won their previous meeting in Melbourne in 2019 6-2 6-4 6-0. When Nadal breezed through the first two sets 6-3 6-2, a repeat of that result looked on the cards.
However, Tsitsipas showed that he has developed another level to his mental toughness, raising his game and hanging with tough with Nadal and taking the next three sets and the match 7-6 6-4 7-5.

Medvedev is on a 19-match winning streak dating back to last November. Tsitsipas is unbeaten in seven matches this year. Both guys are in great shape, but I think the buzz of beating Nadal in the quarterfinals will power Tsitsipas to another super-human effort to beat Medvedev in five sets.
