Tien has risen over 300 spots in the rankings over the last 12 months and established himself as one of the brightest young talents in the game. After qualifying and winning his maiden Grand Slam main draw match, Tien has the ability to cause Medvedev some headaches inside Margaret Court Arena. The Russian endured a disappointing 2024 campaign and was absolutely horrendous in his opening round, dropping two sets to a Thai wildcard ranked outside the top 400. Medvedev will most likely regroup and produce an improved performance here, but Tien still has the ability to take at least a set.
Head To Head
This will be the first career meeting between the pair.
Daniil Medvedev Form
As mentioned, 2024 was a tough year for Medvedev. He suffered more Grand Slam heartbreak in Melbourne and for the first time since 2017, the Russian failed to win a single title throughout the course of a season.
Medvedev let slip of a two-set lead against Jannik Sinner in the Australian Open final and never really recovered - and by the end of 2024, he had mentally checked out.
With the birth of his second child, Medvedev delayed his arrival in Melbourne and perhaps that was evident during a shocking opening round performance against World No. 418 Kasidit Samrej. Medvedev went down two-sets-to-one and broke the net camera with a series of racquet smashes before pulling his head in and completing a 6-2 4-6 3-6 6-1 6-2 victory.
Dating back to the 2024 edition, Medvedev has now played five consecutive five-setters at the Australian Open. Needless to say, if he wants to add a second Grand Slam title to his trophy cabinet, Medvedev needs to avoid unnecessary marathon matches in the early rounds.
Learner Tien Form
It's been a monumental rise for Tien, who has perhaps been overshadowed this tournament in the wake of fellow teenage sensations Joao Fonseca and Jakub Mensik.
The 19-year-old was ranked outside the world's top 450 this time last year and spent three months on the sidelines with a rib fracture.
However, upon his return, Tien won 28 consecutive matches on the Futures and Challenger circuits, gradually building up his ranking.
Tien qualified for the ATP event in Winston-Salem and reached his maiden quarter-final at tour-level, while his results were good enough to gain entry into the Next Gen ATP Finals, where he defeated the likes of Mensik, Arthur Fils and Alex Michelsen before going down to Fonseca in the final.
The American won three matches to qualify for his maiden Australian Open main draw and earned his first Grand Slam victory in the first round, edging out Ugo Carabelli in five sets.

Verdict
Medvedev had a shocking end to 2024 and that form and attitude has seemingly carried over into the start of this season.
The Russian dropped two sets to the World No. 418 in his opening round, so Tien certainly has the chance to do some damage here. In saying that, I fully expect a response from Medvedev - he's a Grand Slam champion after all and he knows that wasn't good enough. I'm backing Tien to take a set, but Medvedev should get the job done in the end.
