Ashleigh Barty vs Shelby Rogers Tips

Top seeded Australian Ashleigh Barty will take on the unseeded American Shelby Rogers for a place in the Australian Open quarterfinals on Monday, February 16. In her most recent match on Saturday, Barty made light work of the dangerous challenge presented by the big hitting Ekaterina Alexandrova, winning in straight sets 6-2 6-4.

Rogers reached the last-16 by defeating Anett Kontaveit 6-4 6-3. During her long career the 28-year old from Mount Pleasant, South Carolina has reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros and Flushing Meadow, and has posted wins over big names like Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova and Serena Williams.

Ash Barty will progress to the quarterfinals by defeating Rogers, but I see her dropping the opening set against the US veteran before winning the next two and the match. These two played each other in a warm up event last month, with Barty triumphing via a super tiebreak.

  • Barty reached the semis last year in Melbourne
  • Barty has been world no.1 since 2019
  • Rogers has reached the last-8 at Roland Garros and the US Open
  • Rogers has won 8 ITF tour titles

Head to Head

These two girls have played each other on two previous occasions, with Ashleigh Barty winning both. Barty defeated Rogers in straight sets at the 2017 Australian Open, and she also beat her last month at the Yarra Valley Classic warm up event, although on that occasion it was a real battle, with Barty triumphing via a super tiebreak instead of a third set 7-5 2-6 10-4 in the quarterfinals.

Ashleigh Barty Form

24-year old Barty has been the women’s world no.1 since December 2019, the same year that Barty won the French Open. In total she has won nine WTA events, and been a losing finalist in five others. Barty’s all-round game has greatly benefited from her decision to invest in what has proved to be a highly successful doubles career, the highlight of which thus far has been the 2018 US Open doubles title.

It is her skill as a doubles player that has added elements to her game that most of her rivals simply don’t have. Barty’s touch, volleying, drop shots and surprise change of pace are all a bi-product of doubles play.

In Melbourne Barty appears to be getting better as the tournament progresses. She has won all of her three matches without dropping a set, and her win on Saturday over the dangerous Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova saw her raise her game whenever it looked as if the powerful Alexandrova might make a break through.

Shelby Rogers Form

Rogers is currently ranked world no.57, although she has been as high as 48. While Rogers hasn’t exactly set the tennis world on fire with her career, she has reached two slam quarterfinals at the French and US Opens and defeated some of the biggest names in women’s tennis including Simona Halep, Petra Kvitova and Serena Williams.

In Melbourne Rogers defeated Britain’s Francesca Jones in the first round 6-4 6-1. She then took out Olga Danilovic 6-2 6-3, followed by her 6-4 6-3 win over the 21st seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia.
Now she takes on world no.1 Ashleigh Barty, the woman she almost beat last time they met at the Yarra.

Verdict

Rogers showed her tenacity at the Yarra Classic in January, taking a 6-2 set off Ash Barty regardless of the strange array of shots that were heading her way. It is fair to think that Rogers might perform even better in this rematch, as she now has a first-hand insight into what it’s like to face Ash Barty.

Although Rogers will likely take a set off Barty, she won’t win the match. Barty does tend to start a little slow at times, and I’m picking Rogers to nab the opening set as she goes all-out early.
However Barty will rebound to take full control in the second set and take the match at a canter.
Barty to win in three sets.
