Humbert is attempting to make ATP history and become the first player to win their first seven finals, while Fils has emptied the tank in reaching the final and is looking for his second 500-level crown.
Head To Head
Humbert leads 3-0 at tour-level and also prevailed in a Challenger match last year. Safe to say this has been a poor match-up for Fils, who has only won one out of the eight sets they've played. Humbert has won both meetings so far in 2024 in Montreal and Hertogenbosch.
Ugo Humbert Form
Humbert has compiled a 32-20 record on the season so far, picking up two titles on hardcourt in Marseille and Dubai.
Incredibly, Humbert has a perfect 6-0 record in ATP finals throughout his career, equalling the Open Era record also held by Martin Klizan and Ernests Gulbis. No player has ever won their first seven tour-level finals.
Humbert would certainly fancy his chances of etching his name in the history books in Tokyo - he's certainly spent far less time on court than his opponent, beating Shintaro Mochizuki and Brandon Nakashima in straight sets, along with benefitting from Jack Draper's retirement after one set.
The 26-year-old was dragged into his first three-set battle of the tournament in the semi-finals, but ultimately proved too strong for Tomas Machac, prevailing 6-3 3-6 6-2.
Arthur Fils Form
Fils has registered a 30-23 record on the season so far, cracking the top 20 for the first time and firmly cementing himself as one of the brightest and most exciting young talents in tennis.
The 20-year-old has lit up Tokyo over the past week with several electrifying performances, knocking out the likes of US Open runner-up Taylor Fritz, former top 10 star Matteo Berrettini, defending champion Ben Shelton and former top five player Holger Rune.
Two of those matches went the distance, while Fils' 7-6 7-6 victory over Rune in the semi-finals less than 24 hours ago went a whopping two hours and 30 minutes, which is quite ridiculous for a straight sets match.
Fils was absolutely gassed at the end of that victory, immediately collapsing on the court after striking a miraculous forehand pass on match point and struggling with cramps in the post-match - you've got to wonder how much he's got left in the tank in the final.

Verdict
Fils has endured a gruelling week in Tokyo and looked absolutely cooked at the end of his win over Rune in the semi-finals - it would take a monumental effort to back up from that.
Humbert meanwhile is fresh as a daisy, has a perfect 6-0 record in finals and is 4-0 overall vs Fils in their H2H, going 8-1 in sets. I've backed Fils against Fritz and Rune this week, but hopping off the bandwagon now and siding with Humbert to cover a small -2.5 games line.
