Kokkinakis is a former champion at his home tournament in Adelaide, while Nishioka has also performed strongly at this tournament in the past, reaching the semi-finals in 2023.
Head To Head
This will be just the second meeting between the pair, with their only clash coming 11 years ago in US Open qualifying as Nishioka came away with a close three-set victory.
Thanasi Kokkinakis Form
Kokkinakis was originally supposed to kick off his Aussie summer at the Brisbane International last week, but he withdrew with a hip injury.
However, it's likely that was a minor issue and Kokkinakis simply needed a bigger break over the off-season.
While is motivation levels can be questioned at stages throughout the season, you can be confident Kokkinakis will be giving it his all at his home tournament in Adelaide.
The 28-year-old won his only ATP title in Adelaide back in 2022, with his last four matches of the tournament going the distance.
Kokkinakis compiled a rather disappointing 14-16 record on the main tour last year, but he did win eight of his last 10 matches of 2024 at all levels, including some big Davis Cup victories for Australia over the likes of Ben Shelton, Arthur Fils and Jakub Mensik.
Yoshihito Nishioka Form
Nishioka put together a 20-17 record at tour-level in 2024, finishing the season at No. 69 in the world.
The main highlight of Nishioka's 2024 campaign came in Atlanta, where he picked up the third ATP title of his career, beating Australia's Jordan Thompson in the final.
The Japanese had a solid start to the 2025 season in Brisbane last week, qualifying for the main draw and beating former Adelaide finalist Arthur Rinderknech in the opening round before losing a tight three-setter to eventual champion Jiri Lehecka.
As mentioned, Nishioka made the Adelaide semi-finals back in 2023, beating Holger Rune and Alexei Popyrin before retiring a set down against Sebastian Korda.

Verdict
Tough match to call and I think it will be close.
Kokkinakis will play above his ranking at home in Adelaide, while Nishioka started the season in promising fashion and has played well at this tournament in the past.
Going to back Kokkinakis to dig this one out in a match that goes the distance.
