Taylor Fritz vs Nikoloz Basilashvili Tips

Rising American star Taylor Fritz takes on Georgian veteran Nikoloz Basilashvili in the semifinals of the Qatar Open ATP 250 event on Friday, March 12. En-route to the semifinals, Fritz eliminated ATP top-20 players David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov, while Basilashvili brought an end to the dreams of a perfect comeback for the great Roger Federer in his quarterfinal on Thursday.

I’m backing Taylor Fritz to continue his excellent run of form with victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili on Friday. While Basilashvili is slightly past his best, Fritz is the total package these days, with a massive serve backed up by powerful groundstrokes and superb mobility. It was Fritz who gave Novak Djokovic his only real test at the Australian Open in February, giving the eight-time champion all he could handle over five thrilling sets.

  • Fritz is 33rd on ATP rankings
  • Fritz is 6-2 this season
  • Basilashvili is 42nd on ATP rankings
  • Basilashvili is 5-5 this season

Head to Head

Taylor Fritz and Nikoloz Basilashvili have played each other only once previously, and that was almost four years ago. In 2017 a 19-year old Taylor Fritz defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, outdoors on a hardcourt at an ATP event in Chengdu, China.

Taylor Fritz Form

A former ITF junior world no.1, 23-year old Taylor Fritz is the best American prospect since Andy Roddick. World no.33 Fritz has looked very impressive in 2021, and if he can maintain his current high level Fritz will surely improve upon his career-high ranking of 24, and finish the season either in or near the ATP top-10.

Back in February, Fritz gave defending champion Novak Djokovic all he could handle in their five-set thriller in the third round of the Australian Open. This week saw Fritz return to action for the first time since Melbourne. At the Qatar Open ATP 250 event, the unseeded Fritz defeated sixth seed David Goffin in the last-16 by a 6-1, 5-7, 7-6 scoreline, and then eliminated fourth-seed Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-3, 7-5.

The 6’4” Fritz is one of the new breed of super athletes gracing the courts that includes other giants such as Stefanos Tsitsipas, Matteo Berrettini, Daniil Medvedev and Nick Kyrgios, players who despite their huge size have the speed and agility of a much smaller person.

Nikoloz Basilashvili Form

29-year old Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili is currently ranked 42nd in the world, but in 2019 reached a career high 16th in the ATP singles rankings.  Basilashvili is a three-time winner on the ATP tour, claiming his first titles in Hamburg and Beijing in 2018, and retaining his Hamburg title in 2019.
After reaching the quarterfinal of an ATP 250 event in Turkey back in January, Basilashvili subsequently exited his next four tournaments – including the Australian Open and last week’s Rotterdam ATP – in the first round.

This week the Georgian has found some form, and after defeating Aussie John Millman in the first round 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 and Malek Jaziri 6-2, 6-2 in the last-16, Basilashvili was very much cast in the role of the bad guy as he ended Roger Federer’s comeback with a 3-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over the Swiss superstar.

Verdict

The hype this week surrounding the return to tennis of Roger Federer following a year’s absence due to injury and surgery has brought massive attention to Doha and the Qatar Open this week. The 20-time slam winner defeated Britain’s Dan Evans on Tuesday, and then ran into Nikoloz Basilashvili in the quarterfinals, who promptly ended Federer’s comeback - at least for now - in three sets.

I’m backing Taylor Fritz to now end Nikoloz Basilashvili’s own comeback run with a straight-sets victory on Friday. Fritz has looked very impressive all week, especially in ousting David Goffin and Denis Shapovalov, and should he get past Basilashvili, he has an excellent chance of defeating either Bautista-Agut or Rublev in Saturday’s final.
