An intriguing second round showdown awaits in the second round of the Indian Wells Masters when Stefanos Tsitsipas faces Thiago Seyboth Wild on Friday.

Tsitsipas was playing some horrendous tennis before a resurgent week in Dubai last month saw him emerge with the title, while Seyboth Wild has proven in the past that he loves facing top players and can play well above his ranking on the bigger stages.

Seyboth Wild defeated the likes of Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov, who were both ranked inside the top 15 at the time, in Indian Wells and Miami last year and the Brazilian could be primed for another big performance in the Californian desert, where the slower conditions suit his game. I'm still going to need to see more from Tsitsipas before I can start backing him again at such short odds, so I'm on Seyboth Wild for the upset here.

Tsitsipas leads 1-0, but it was a close contest indoors at Antwerp 2024, with the Greek edging their second round 7-6 4-6 7-5.

Tsitsipas was in all sorts of trouble to start the season.

The Greek was bundled out in the first round of the Australian Open by Alex Michelsen and was later upstaged by a man with a torn hamstring (Hamad Medjedovic) in Doha.

However, a change in racquet sparked a change in fortune for Tsitsipas in Dubai, as he put together a much-needed run to the ATP 500 title.

Tsitsipas defeated the likes of Karen Khachanov, Matteo Berrettini and Tallon Griekspoor before toppling Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in the final.

Thiago Seyboth Wild Form

Seyboth Wild has been in poor form leading into this tournament, dropping down to No. 91 in the rankings from a career-high of No. 58.

However, the Brazilian has shown time and time again he can flick the switch at a moment's notice and produce some spellbinding tennis out of nowhere.

Seyboth Wild is a modest 3-5 to start the season, but he restored some confidence with a three-set victory over the in-form Alexander Muller in the opening round of Indian Wells.

After reaching the third round of both Indian Wells and Miami last year, Seyboth Wild clearly likes these conditions and will be hoping to lift for another big performance here.

Stefanos Tsitsipas v Thiago Seyboth Wild

Tsitsipas returned to title town in Dubai, but I'm not fully convinced he's going to be back to his sustained best tennis, while he had some trouble with Seyboth Wild in their only previous meeting.

The Brazilian has demonstrated an ability to challenge top players in the past, so I'm backing the Brazilian to take a set and cover the line in a close match.
