Equipped with a new racquet and seemingly a new lease on life, Tsitsipas has enjoyed a brilliant resurgence over the last couple of tournaments - and I'm backing the Greek to continue his great run of form and reach the Indian Wells quarter-finals here.

Tsitsipas is serving superbly (he won 22/24 of his first serves vs Matteo Berrettini in his last match) and while he's doing those numbers, he will very hard to stop. Rune, for me, still isn't anywhere close to the level he wants to be at - the Dane registered his first top 20 win on outdoor hardcourt in 12 months in his last match against Ugo Humbert, which highlights just how consistently he's been coming up short against the game's elite on this surface. I'll be surprised if Tsitsipas loses this match if he maintains his current level.

Head To Head

Rune leads 2-0, which will give him some confidence ahead of this clash. The Dane in four sets at the 2022 French Open before doubling down in the Stockholm final later that year.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Form

It's been a difficult last couple of seasons for Tsitsipas and early signs in 2025 were that his struggles were only getting worse.

Tsitsipas played poorly in Australia, a place where he so often produces his best tennis, suffering an opening round defeat at Melbourne Park to Alex Michelsen.

The Greek continued to play subpar tennis in his next couple of tournaments in Rotterdam and Doha, but out of nowhere, he recaptured his best tennis in Dubai.

Tsitsipas defeated the likes of Karen Khachanov, Matteo Berrettini, Tallon Griekspoor and Felix Auger-Aliassime to pick up the 500-level title.

Now, Tsitsipas has a great opportunity for another deep run and potentially get his ranking back towards the top five, with the top seeds in his section of the draw - Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud - both eliminated early.

Tsitsipas eased past Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-2 6-4 in his Indian Wells opener before toppling Matteo Berrettini in convincing fashion, 6-3 6-3 and dropping just two points behind his first serve.

Holger Rune Form

Rune is another player who's form has dipped considerably over the last couple of years - which is a surprise, because as a teenager, he was looking like dominating the game alongside the likes of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz for the next decade or so.

There's obviously still plenty of time for Rune, but he's really struggled to find his identity on the court over the last two years, which hasn't been helped by a constant coaching merry-go-round.

Still just 21 years of age, Rune has a modest 8-6 record on the season, making the fourth round of the Australian Open (taking a set off Sinner) before some questionable scheduling that saw him fail to win back-to-back matches at Rotterdam, Buenos Aires and Acapulco.

Rune defeated Corentin Moutet in straight sets to kick off his Indian Wells campaign before registering his first top 20 win on outdoor hardcourts in 12 months, knocking out 18th seed Ugo Humbert 5-7 6-4 7-5 in the third round.

Verdict

Tsitsipas is flying and with confidence restored, he looks ready to record a first win over Rune as they play for the first time since 2022.

Rune is still searching for his best tennis and it would be a huge scalp if he caused the upset on current form. Can't see it happening though - backing Tsitsipas to cover a small line and there's value on the Greek prevailing in straights.
