Rafael Nadal vs Jannik Sinner Tips

All-time great Rafael Nadal takes on potential future great Jannik Sinner in a mouthwatering battle of the ages in the second round of the Italian open on Wednesday, May 12. As the no.2 seed, Nadal received a bye to the second round, while Sinner set up his shot out the King of Clay by defeating Ugo Humbert on Monday.

Sinner was at his brilliant best in dispatching Humbert, and avenging his loss against the Polish no.1 in the final of the Miami Masters in April. Sinner won 6-2 6-4, in what was only his fifth win during this European clay-court swing. Sinner’s best result so far was reaching the Barcelona Open semifinals, losing to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Last week in Madrid, Sinner was surprisingly beaten in the second round by fast rising Australian prospect Alexei Popyrin.

This will be only the second time these two players have met. Last year Nadal defeated Sinner at Roland Garros 7-6 6-4 6-1 on the way to his 14th French Open. I’m backing Jannik Sinner to score what will be a sensational victory over Rafael Nadal on Wednesday, stopping him in two tense sets. Read on for the reasons for this prediction.

  • Nadal bookies favorite in Rome
  • Sinner 18th in world rankings
  • Sinner 16 years younger than Nadal

Head to Head

Rafael Nadal and Jannik Sinner have played each other just once previously, and that was last year in the French Open quarterfinals in October. On that occasion, Nadal was victorious 7-6 6-4 6-1.

Rafael Nadal Form

Rafael Nadal hasn’t had the greatest preparation for his upcoming attempt to win an unprecedented 21st Grand Slam event by taking a 14th French Open trophy. First off, Rafa was overpowered by the heavy hitting of Andre Rublev in the quarterfinals in Monte Carlo. He subsequently bounced back to win a 12th title in Barcelona with an epic three-set final victory over Tsitsipas.

Then last week Nadal seemed to be playing his best tennis when he was suddenly well beaten by Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals, the German winning 6-4 6-4. Rafa may have won five times in Madrid, but his last title was in 2017. The Madrid Masters is held at altitude, and the courts are unusually fast for clay, factors which favored the 6’6” Zverev’s massive serving and power hitting.

Now Rafa goes straight into a matchup against a player who’s sure to be top-ten before the end of 2021, and challenging for slams next season. With only the top-16 players seeded in Rome, world no.18 Sinner has become a “dangerous floater”, and he’s landed right in Nadal’s path.

Jannik Sinner Form

Last September an 18-year-old Jannik Sinner reached the third round in Rome, knocking out sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas along the way. A fortnight later, Sinner would reach the quarterfinals of the French Open, defeating both David Goffin and Alexander Zverev en-route to a crack at the soon-to-be 13-time winner Rafael Nadal.

Because of the pandemic, the French Tennis Federation rescheduled their flagship event from its usual May-June slot to September-October. The courts at Roland Garros went from being dry and comparatively fast, to cold, damp, heavy and much slower. Nadal was victorious 7-6 6-4 6-1, and the scoreline shows that Sinner was in the match for the first two sets.

Because of the dryer courts in Rome, we can expect a different kind of match on Wednesday. Of course, the conditions could play into the hands of Nadal, but they could also favor the clinical hitting of the ice-cold Germanic-Italian teenager with the poker face and assassins mentality. This will be Nadal’s first match since the heavy defeat to Zverev, while Sinner looked superb in his opening round, straight-sets win over the Miami Masters champ Ugo Humbert.

Verdict

Of course, Rafael Nadal is the big favorite to defeat Jannik Sinner in their Italian Open second round match on Wednesday. The Spanish world no.2 has won more than 60 clay court titles, nine of them in Rome.

However, Rafa goes into his match against Sinner with that heavy defeat to Alexander Zverev last week in Madrid hanging over him. By comparison, Sinner looked superb in his Rome opener on Monday, dispatching Miami Masters champion Ugo Humbert 6-2 6-4. Nadal turns 35 during the French Open, 16 years older than 19-year old Sinner.

I’m backing Jannik Sinner to pull off what will be a sensational upset over Rafael Nadal, defeating the 20-time slam winner in two tight sets that will be notable for the Italian’s clinical hitting, and the Spaniards multiple unforced errors.
