Andrey Rublev vs Marton Fucsovics Tips
World no.8 Andrey Rublev will face qualifier Marton Fucsovics in the final of the Rotterdam ATP event on Sunday March 7. Both men were the underdogs in their semifinals but came through in impressive fashion, Rublev defeating 2nd seed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3 7-6, while Fucsovics kept his dream week alive by thumping Borna Coric 6-4 6-1.
Rublev and Fucsovics will be meeting for the third time, with honours even at one win apiece. Both players have looked impressive this week, and the normally one-dimensional Rublev has even shown off some deft volleying skills. Fucsovics, for so long considered little more than an ATP journeyman pro, is proving that life can begin at 29.
Andrey Rublev has the power to blast anybody off the court, and if he gets his nose in front in a match he is extremely hard to dislodge. Marton Fucsovics is a savvy pro with more than 10 years on the ATP tour, and he has played Rublev twice before, winning and losing against the Russian in two tough clay-court battles.
This match will be a far different affair, played out on a fast hardcourt in Rotterdam, and it will favour the player who has both the power, the variety of shot and the better tennis brain. For me, despite the huge difference in world rankings, Fucsovics is the more complete player going into this match, and I’m backing him to defeat Rublev in straight sets.

Head to Head
Andrey Rublev and Marton Fucsovics have played each other twice, with honours even at one win each. Fucsovics defeated Rublev in a Davis cup tie back in 2017 representing Hungary against Russia. Fucsovics was triumphant over five gruelling sets on clay, the scoreline 6-2 6-4 5-7 2-6 6-3.
In 2020, Rublev defeated Fucsovics in the fourth round again on clay, this time at Roland Garros, winning 6-7 7-5 6-4 7-6.
Andrey Rublev Form
Andrey Rublev reached his 10th ATP final in impressive fashion, dropping just one set all week against Jeremy Chardy in the quarterfinals. The 23-year-old Russian had to be at his best in his semifinal against Stefanos Tsitsipas, a player fresh off the semifinals of the Australian Open, two places above him in the world rankings at sixth, and leading their head-to-head 3-2.
Effectively the match would be decided early in the first set when Rublev broke the Tsitsipas serve. From then on the Russian was in the driving seat, and as he has proved time and again, Rublev is an extremely good front runner. Rublev held his nerve – and his serve – throughout the match, taking the first set 6-3 and then winning the second set and the match on a tiebreak 7-6.
Marton Fucsovics Form
Despite reaching the third round of the Australian Open and defeating 2014 champion Stan Wawrinka along the way, Marton Fucsovics had to qualify to play the main draw in Rotterdam this week. The world number 59 became only the second qualifier to reach a final in Rotterdam with an impressive week of tennis in which he has dropped just one set.
After getting past 6’11” US giant Reilly Opelka and his massive serving 7-6 6-7 7-6, Fucsovics has been in comparative cruise control, gliding past ex-junior stars Alejandro Davidovich and Tommy Paul, before destroying former world no.12 Borna Coric 6-4 6-1 in the semifinals.
In 11 years as a professional tennis player, Fucsovics has never cracked the world’s top 30, but regardless of what happens against Rublev in the final, he should achieve that when Monday's ATP rankings are revealed. That said, based off is performances in Melbourne last month and Rotterdam this week, breaking into the world’s top-30 should be the least of his ambitions.

Fucsovics has shown both a great serve and excellent returning this week, and that will be essential against a big server like Rublev. Look for the Hungarian to get an early break and take control of the match, and then watch Rublev lose confidence, as he so often does when things don’t go his way.
Fucsovics will maintain his focus and keep the pressure on Rublev, taking the final in straight sets for only his second ATP tour title.
