Dimitrov hadn't played since retiring injured at Wimbledon, but he raced through his Montreal opener for the loss of just one game and looks to have immediately regained top form.

Locked at 1-1, but the pair haven't met for three years. Popyrin advanced when Dimitrov retired at the US Open in 2021, while the Bulgarian prevailed in an Australian Open lead-up tournament earlier that year.

Grigor Dimitrov Form

It's been a resurgent season for Dimitrov, who is playing his best tennis since reaching No. 3 in the world back in 2017 - a year he was crowned the year-end ATP Finals champion.

Dimitrov is 33-11 for the season and added a ninth career title to his cabinet at the very start of the year when he secured the Brisbane International silverware.

A deep run at Wimbledon appeared on the cards, but unfortunately Dimitrov was forced to retire in the opening set of his fourth round showdown with Daniil Medvedev.

However, Dimitrov looks to have made a full recovery after absolutely trouncing Rinky Hijikata 6-1 6-0 in just 57 minutes on Thursday.

Alexei Popyrin Form

After cracking the top 40 at the start of the season, Popyrin's form tailed off and he is currently down at No. 62 in the world.

This is mostly due to his inability to defend his Umag title a couple of weeks ago, with the Aussie suffering a first round exit.

Perhaps Popyrin was thinking of the upcoming Olympics, where he put in a respectable showing, advancing to the R16 before losing a tight match to Alexander Zverev.

Popyrin made the quick turnaround to Montreal and has looked very good, defeating Tomas Machac and Ben Shelton in straight sets.

Popyrin is looking good, but I don't like this match-up for him. Dimitrov's ability to neutralise Popyrin's big serve will be key and from the baseline, the Bulgarian is just too consistent.
