Goffin leads 1-0, with their only previous meeting also coming in the week before a slam. The Belgian prevailed by a dominant 6-1 6-3 score at Winston-Salem 2024.

Goffin enjoyed a strong finish to the 2024 season, with his ranking climbing back towards the top 50 - and he has ample opportunity to accumulate points in the first half of 2025.
The Belgian, a former top 10 star, reached the semi-finals of Winston-Salem, the third round of the US Open and the quarter-finals of both the Shanghai Masters and 500-level Swiss Indoors in Basel, taking some solid scalps over the likes of Alexander Zverev, Lorenzo Musetti and Ugo Humbert.
The 34-year-old was forced to qualify for the Australian Open last season, but he's rebuilt his ranking, which has allowed him to enter these tournaments in the lead-up. Goffin didn't have a great start in Brisbane, losing in the opening round to Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets.
Rinky Hijikata Form
Hijikata found it difficult to take his game to the next level in 2024 and finished the year with a rather disappointing 15-22 record at tour-level.
The Aussie managed to remain in the top 100 courtesy of a late run in the local Challenger tournaments in Adelaide and Sydney towards the end of the season, claiming the title in Playford and finishing runner-up to Thanasi Kokkinakis in Sydney.
However, Hijikata hasn't won a tour-level match since September and had the misfortune of drawing Novak Djokovic in his Brisbane opener last week, losing 6-3 6-3. The 23-year-old also lost to countryman Adam Walton in Adelaide this past weekend, but has entered into the main draw as a lucky loser.

Verdict
Hijikata has been struggling lately and he doesn't have much time to get some matches and wins under his belt before next week's Australian Open.
Goffin meanwhile had a great finish to 2024, but his loss to Vukic in Brisbane wasn't a great start to 2025.
Tough one to call, but Goffin has showcased more promise in recent times and demolished Hijikata for the loss of just four games a few months ago - will back the Belgian to prevail again here.
