Ruud's motivation this week is also questionable as he's already secured his spot at the upcoming ATP Finals, while Bonzi has been ripping apart opponents on the Challenger Tour lately and looks ready to make an impact here.

Ruud has registered a 49-22 record on the season, but the bulk of his victories occurred during the first half of the season.

Since making the French Open semi-finals, Ruud has struggled to find his best tennis and he comes into this clash having won just two of his last nine matches, suffering defeats against the likes of Henrique Rocha, Aleksandar Vukic and Jordan Thompson (twice).

However, due to his excellent form in the first half of 2024 - and Novak Djokovic announcing his withdrawal - Ruud has officially secured his place at the season-ending ATP Finals.

While his fellow participants Alex de Minaur and Andrey Rublev have since withdrawn from Metz and Belgrade respectively, Ruud has at this stage opted to keep playing, with the Norwegian perhaps knowing he needs match wins under his belt before arriving in Turin.

Benjamin Bonzi Form

Having hit a career-high ranking of No. 42 last season, Bonzi has endured a nightmare 2024, falling to as low as No. 180 in September.

However, Bonzi is saving his season at the last moment, with the Frenchman winning 19 of his last 21 matches indoors at Challenger level, taking out titles in Roanne and St-Brieuc, along with a runner-up showing in Brest.

Arriving in Metz without a tour-level win all season, Bonzi went on to stun recently-crowned Antwerp champion Roberto Bautista Agut 7-6 6-3 after initially qualifying into the main draw.

Bonzi will now attempt to claim his first top 10 scalp after going 0-5 against the game's elite throughout his career.

Casper Ruud v Benjamin Bonzi

Whether Ruud intends to try and go deep in Metz or simply wants one more match under his belt before the ATP Finals, I don't think it matters.

Bonzi is back playing some of his best tennis and he's won 19 of his last 21 matches indoors. The Frenchman has a great chance to salvage what has been a poor season and I think he takes it.
