It's been an excellent resurgent season for Nakashima and now he has the chance to make a further impact by making the Hangzhou final, with Cilic still on the comeback trail from surgery.

After fitness and form struggles caused him to drop out of the top 100 last year, Nakashima has done a brilliant job of first rebuilding his game on the Challenger Tour and now doing some damage back on the ATP Tour.

Indeed, Nakashima has sky-rocketed up to a career-high ranking of No. 39, put together a 25-16 record on the season so far.

Seeded No. 4 this week in Hangzhou, Nakashima received a bye in the opening round before edging out Coleman Wong in three sets and Rinky Hijikata 7-5 6-3 in the quarter-finals.

This will be Nakashima's second ATP semi-final of 2024, with his previous effort resulting in a straight sets defeat to Jack Draper in Stuttgart.

Marin Cilic Form

Cilic had a 0-4 record on the main tour in 2024 before arriving in Hangzhou this week, with the former World No. 3 forced to undergo another round of knee surgery earlier in the year.

The former US Open champion is down at No. 777 in the rankings as a result, but is targeting a regular return to the ATP Tour and top 100.

Cilic has battled hard so far in Hangzhou as he attempts to make an unlikely final, surviving Zachary Svajda and Yasutaka Uchiyama in three sets, while he also posted a victory over Yoshihito Nishioka.

The 35-year-old has won 36 of his previous 66 tour-level semi-finals, with his last victory in such a match coming two years ago in Tel Aviv.
