Borna Coric vs Marton Fucsovics Tips

Borna Coric and Marton Fucsovics will meet in the semifinals of the ATP event in Rotterdam on Saturday, March 6. Both players have been in great form this week, and one of them will take on the winner of the other semifinal between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Andrey Rublev in Sunday’s final.

Current world no.26 Coric has looked back to his best in Rotterdam this week, winning his three matches without dropping a set. On Friday Coric overcame former world no.4 Kei Nishikori in the quarterfinals 7-6 7-6 to set up his semifinal against Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics.

World no.59 Fucsovics was well known on the tennis circuit as the go-to guy for tips on health and fitness, but after his performances at the Australian Open and again in Rotterdam, this could be the year he becomes known for his tennis.

In fact, I’m backing Fucsovics to defeat Coric in three sets on Saturday. If you’d like to learn the logic behind such a pick, read on.

  • Coric formerly 12th on the ATP tour
  • Coric defeated Nick Kyrgios in Melbourne 2
  • Fucsovics defeated Stan Wawrinka at AO
  • Fucsovics is Hungarian no.1

Head to Head

Borna Coric and Marton Fucsovics have played each other three times, with Coric leading their head-to-head 3-0. They first played each other in the second round of the Australian Open in 2019, with Coric winning in straight sets. Their next match took place later that year at the ATP event in St Petersburg in Russia, and after two tight sets Fucsovics retired injured with the score at 6-7 7-5 3-0.

Finally, in 2020 they faced off in the first round of the ATP Paris Masters, with Coric winning 7-6 6-1.

Borna Coric Form

Borna Coric must feel as if his season is finally beginning, after false starts at the Melbourne warm-up event and at the Australian Open. The 24-year old former world no.12 defeated Nick Kyrgios 6-3 6-4 at Melbourne 2 in February, but lost to Britain’s Dan Evans in the quarterfinals.

At the Australian Open Coric began with a straight-sets win over Argentina’s Guido Pella, but crashed out to world no.192 Mackenzie McDonald in the second round.

However Coric has looked sharp this week, winning his three matches without dropping a set, and defeating former world no.4 Kei Nishikori in yesterday’s quarterfinal 7-6 7-6.

Marton Fucsovics Form

Prior to this year’s Australian Open, few people outside of hardcore tennis fans had heard of Marton Fucsovics, but that all changed when the Hungarian defeated 2014 AO champion Stan Wawrinka in 5 epic sets in the second round at Melbourne this year.

The 29-year old ATP tour veteran and fitness fanatic needed every ounce of his considerable reserves of stamina to outlast the relentless Wawrinka in the fifth set tiebreak, finally winning it 11-9. For a while it looked as if Fucsovic was going to do it again when he won the second set from Milos Raonic in the next round, but that was as good as it got, and he was finally beaten 7-6 5-7 6-2 6-2.

With a current world ranking of 59, Fucsovics had to qualify for the main draw in Rotterdam. In his first round match, Fucsovics overcame American service machine 6’11” Riley Opelka 7-6 6-7 7-6. He then defeated a very different player in rising Spanish star Alejandro Davidovich Fokina - a former junior world no.1 - 6-3 6-2.

Next up was a quarterfinal against another former high ranking junior, up-and-coming US star Tommy Paul. Again the Hungarian Iron-Man brushed the young upstart aside, winning easily 6-4 6-3 and setting up his semifinal against Borna Coric.

On paper this looks like a straightforward win for Borna Coric, based specifically off his 3-0 head-to-head record over Marton Fucsovics. However, the Hungarian journeyman pro has turned into a different player since his huge victory over Wawrinka in February, as exemplified by his easy wins over two of the ATP’s brightest young stars in Alejandro Davidovich and Tommy Paul.
Fucsovics is already his country’s best player since Balazs Taroczy, and he is now playing with tremendous self belief, and revealing that he is actually much more than a great athlete. Because of this, I’m backing Fucsovics to pull off another upset and defeat Coric in three tough sets.
