It's Rublev's last chance to qualify for the ATP Finals after dropping out the top eight in the Race to Turin last week, while Sonego is looking to end his year on a high with a top 10 scalp.
Head To Head
Sonego leads 2-1 and has won the last two meetings between the pair, including a thrilling five-set triumph at the 2023 French Open.
Andrey Rublev Form
It's been a disappointing overall season for Rublev, despite winning 42 matches in total and adding two more ATP titles to his trophy cabinet.
Rublev once again failed to break his Grand Slam quarter-final losing streak - in fact, he only reached the last eight at the Australian Open.
Of more concern has been Rublev's self-sabotage on court, with the Russian repeatedly striking himself in frustration with his racquet.
Rublev's overall erratic year has seen him drop out of the top eight in the Race to Turin, with the World No. 9 losing in his opening match in Paris last week to Francisco Cerundolo.
To put it simply, Rublev needs to out-perform one of Alex de Minaur or Casper Ruud this week in order to qualify for the ATP Finals.
Lorenzo Sonego Form
It hasn't been a great season for Sonego - he's registered a 20-28 losing record and is 30 spots off his career-high ranking at No. 51.
Sonego somewhat salvaged his year in August when he won the Winston-Salem title - and now, he'll be hoping to secure back-to-back wins for the first time since that tournament.
The Italian defeated lucky loser Gregoire Barrere 6-4 7-5 in his Metz opener and will now be looking for the seventh top 10 win of his career against Rublev.
Sonego has fond memories of the Moselle Open, winning the title in Metz back in 2022.

Verdict
Rublev has been all over the place this season and he repeatedly buckles under the pressure in big moments.
It doesn't get much bigger than this, with Rublev needing to keep winning this week in order to qualify for the ATP Finals. Sonego has won the last two meetings between the players and usually lifts vs top 10 players, while he's also a former champion in Metz.
Backing the Italian to at least win a set and he could easily win outright as well.
