Andrey Rublev vs Lorenzo Sonego Live Stream & Tips

7th seed Andrey Rublev takes on local boy Lorenzo Sonego in the quarterfinals of the Italian Open on Friday, May 14. Rublev defeated 10th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in straight sets in his previous match, while Sonego pulled off the upset of the tournament by defeating world no.4 Dominic team in a three-set epic.

The current boom in Italian tennis has seen an unprecedented 10 Italian players ranked in the ATP top 100. Earlier this year, world no.9 Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini led their country to the ATP Cup final. ATP NextGen teenagers Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti are both rapidly rising up the tennis rankings, with Sinner rated as the best prospect in tennis.

However, one player who seems to have gone completely under the radar is Lorenzo Sonego. That certainly will be the case anymore following the dramatic scenes on Thursday evening that saw the 26-year-old 6’3” Sonego stun the tennis world with a 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 win over clay-court powerhouse Dominic Thiem in three hours and 28 minutes.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Andrey Rublev was every bit as impressive in a far more controlled and clinical manner as he dispatched another clay-court specialist in Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut two sets 6-4, 6-4. Impressive as Rublev’s win certainly was, I’m backing Sonego to keep his and the Italian fans’ dream alive and pull off another upset, defeating the world no.7 in another three-set thriller.

  • Rublev ranked 7th in the world
  • Rublev 27-7 this season
  • Sonego ranked 33 in the world
  • Sonego 11-8 this season

Head to Head

Andre Rublev and Lorenzo Sonego have played each other twice previously, with the score 2-0 in Rublev’s favor. Their only match on the ATP tour main draw took place last season in Vienna, where Rublev triumphed 6-4, 6-4. However, these two also met in 2016 in an ATP Challenger tour event in Cortina, Italy where Rublev was also victorious, 6-3, 7-5.

Andrey Rublev Form

23-year-old Andrey Rublev has had an exceptional 2021 already, reaching the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, winning the title in Rotterdam, reaching the semifinals in Doha, Dubai and Miami, then in his first clay-court tournament of the season, he defeated Rafael Nadal en route to the Monte Carlo Masters final where he lost to Stefanos Tsitsipas. Rublev is 29-7 this season, a record only equaled by Tsitsipas.

This week in Rome, Rublev opened his account with the three set victory over Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, coming back from a set down to win 6-7, 6-1, 6-4. Next up came the challenge of the resolute Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut, but Rublev was more than up for said challenge, winning comfortably 6-4, 6-4. The Russian is doing what he does best right now, which is relentlessly pummeling the ball from the back with unnerving accuracy.

Lorenzo Sonego Form

26-year-old Lorenzo Sonego is currently ranked 33 in the world, however following his heroics this week, and depending how far he goes, he could even break into the world’s top-20. Sonego began his campaign in Rome with a three-set victory over 14th seed Gael Monfils 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. A straight sets victory over fellow countryman Gianluca Mager followed, and then came his match against Dominic Thiem.

Aside from the King of Clay himself Rafael Nadal, Thiem is considered to be the best clay-court player on the ATP tour. Twice a finalist at Roland Garros, 10 of Thiem’s 17 tour titles have come on the red dirt, and he has reached an additional seven finals. However, Sonego showed scant regard for Thiem’s reputation, defeating the Austrian 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 in a match that lasted just under 3 ½ hours.

“It’s amazing, an unbelievably emotional moment for me because I’m in Rome, in my Italy with fans for two sets," said Sonego in an on-court interview. "I’m so happy for this victory, for this match. Thiem is with Nadal the best player on clay.”

A week ago a quarterfinal featuring Andrey Rublev and Lorenzo Sonego would have seemed highly unlikely. More unlikely would have been anybody picking Sonego to defeat the world no.7.
However, that is exactly what I’m about to do. I’m backing Sonego to defeat Rublev in a three set thriller, with plenty of explosive hitting from the back of the court from both men, but the difference being Sonego’s extra creativity, specifically his deft touch around the net with his drop shots and volleys.
