New Race For Eagle Farm - The Gateway to deliver Stradbroke ballot exemption

Racing Queensland has introduced a new restricted race that represents an opportunity for four-year-olds to win their way into the Stradbroke Handicap.

A new race worth $250,000 that provides the winner a ballot exempt entry into the 2020 Stradbroke Handicap headlined a host of announcements on Monday by Racing Queensland.

Known as The Gateway, the winner of the four-year-olds only December 14 race at Eagle Farm will jump straight to the front of the Stradbroke queue.

Racing Queensland chief executive Brendan Parnell believes these initiatives will ensure put the Summer and Winter Racing In Queensland continues to grow.

“The TAB Queensland Summer Carnival is rapidly emerging,” he said.

“We’ve introduced a number of exciting initiatives including The Gateway which provides the perfect platform for sprinters looking to secure a berth in the Stradbroke.

“Working closely with the Brisbane Racing Club, three-year-old sprint and staying races have also received a major boost.

“But we’re not done yet, and we look forward to sharing further enhancements in the near future.”

Not only has this new race been a change to their summer racing program, but also prize-money increases in the following races:

  • Grand Prix Stakes ($100,000 to $250,000)
  • B.J McLachlan Stakes ($200,000 to $250,000)
  • Gold Edition Plate ($125,000 to $200,000)
  • Vo Rogue Plate ($200,000 to $300,000)
  • Eagle Way heats ($85,000 to $105,000)
  • The Nudgee ($125,000 to $200,000)

Brisbane Racing Club Chairman Neville Bell said there's plenty to get excited about with this new program.

“The Gateway is a new $250,000 race for four-year-olds that will provide the winner with a guaranteed start in the TAB Stradbroke,” Bell said.

“We also look forward to the switch to summer of the Grand Prix – a race that has been won by the greats of the turf such as Kingston Town, Surround and Balmerino.

“We’ve worked collaboratively with Racing Queensland on this schedule and we thank them for their co-operation and their commitment to a format that offers so much. 

“This is exciting for our local industry because it provides real pathways for our local owners and trainers to achieve feature race wins in Brisbane with strong prize money on offer."
