Explosive Australian fast bowler James Pattinson has been dropped ahead of the second Ashes test at Lord's, with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc added to the squad.

It's expected that Hazlewood will take Pattinson's place in the starting 11.

The opener at Edgbaston was the 29-year-old's first international test since 2016 after sustaining a string of back injuries.

Australian captain Tim Paine said the team elected to rest Pattinson to ensure he remains healthy for the entire five test series.

"What's happened in the past is we've got him back, we know how good he is so we keep using him and keep bowling him, and eventually he's broken again," Paine said.

"We're really lucky in the fact that we've got two bowlers on the sidelines (Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood) that are world-class and we want to make sure that James is absolutely cherry ripe every time he plays.

"He's available for selection but we've decided to rest him for this game and make sure that his long-term future is in really good shape."

Pattinson's opening test saw him claim two first innings wickets while contributing an important 47-run second innings with the bat.

Paine said that resting the Victorian was all part of the plan.

"He's available for selection but we've decided to rest him for this game and make sure that his long-term future is in really good shape."

Australia's squad for the second Test: Cameron Bancroft, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Nathan Lyon, Tim Paine (C) Peter Siddle, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner
