Sweden vs Australia Women Tips

Sweden Women were eliminated by Spain in the semi-final as their brilliant World Cup campaign ended in disappointment.

Australia carried the weight of the nation on their back and were right in the contest with England at 1-1 only to fall to a heartbreaking 3-1 defeat.

  • Sweden have only lost once at the competition (W5) (World Cup)
  • Sweden have kept three clean sheets at the tournament (World Cup)
  • Australia have lost two of their matches (W4) (World Cup)
  • Australia have four clean sheets in six games (World Cup)

Head to Head

Australia hammered Sweden 4-0 the last time the two came together in 2022. In their last 10, the Matildas have won once, Sweden have won six times and there have been three draws.

Sweden Women Form

Sweden Women have been superb across the World Cup, with their only loss at the competition coming at the hands of Spain in the semi-finals.

Sweden were able to knock out reigning champions the USA in the Round of 16, while they also beat a Japan side that were in scintillating form. However, those games were so big that they may have felt like they had played two finals before they had even gotten to the semi-final, with the physical and mental toll of these games huge.

Against Spain, Sweden struggled to create much, and they would have been fortunate to have taken the game to extra-time. Against Australia, Sweden will look to try to silence the home fans with an early goal as they will be all too aware of how much energy the crowd can give the home side.

Australia Women Form

Australia Women were excellent against England, but they came unstuck against arguably the best team in Women's football right now.

Sam Kerr's stunning long-range strike helped the Matildas to make it 1-1, with this seeing the home side building momentum. However, an opportunistic goal from Lauren Hemp saw England go 2-1 up, with Alessia Russo profiting from the Aussies searching for an equaliser as she scored in the 86th minute.

Despite this defeat, Australia should be proud of their team, and they will be willing the Matildas onto a bronze medal in what has been a superb tournament for the co-hosts.

I am backing Australia to win this one as both sides find the back of the net. While Sweden will not be an easy opponent to beat, I believe the Matildas have enough to end their World Cup campaign with a win.
