Barcelona vs Real Madrid Tips

In what is the biggest match of La Liga calendar and probably European club football, Barcelona and Real Madrid battle it out in the first El Clásico of the season. This 9th round match for the two sides will be played at the Camp Nou in Barcelona early morning on Monday.

It will be a strange El Clásico as Barcelona are still coming to terms with the exit of Lionel Messi. Their poor form gives hope for Real Madrid to continue their good league form. However, Espanyol have shown in the last matchday that Real Madrid are also not in impeccable form. I am backing this match to produce action at goal ends resulting in at least three goals. Madrid are in relatively better form and are likely to come out with full points.

  • Real Madrid have seen over 2.5 goals in 4 of their last 5 away matches (La Liga).
  • Real Madrid have won their last 3 matches against Barcelona (All Competitions).

Head to Head

Barcelona and Real Madrid have played each other in 247 matches with 97 wins for Barcelona and 98 for Real Madrid. The remaining 52 ended in stalemates.

Last season saw Real Madrid win both their league matches against Barcelona. They won 3-1 at Camp Nou and followed it up with a 2-1 win at home.

Barcelona Form

A tight 1-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League gave Barcelona a lifeline in the continental competition, winning consecutive games for the first time this season.

In La Liga, Barcelona are 7th with 15 points from 8 matches with four wins, three draws and one loss.

The hosts have been performing relatively better at home winning four of their five league matches. Barca scored at least 2 goals in each of those wins.

Barcelona Team News

Ronald Araujo is out due to an injury and Jordi Alba is also doubtful after picking up a foot strain. Martin Braithwate and Pedri continue to be long-term absentees.

Real Madrid Form

Real Madrid thumped Shakhtar Donetsk 5-0 in the Champions League to stop a three-match winless run.

In La Liga, Real are 2nd in the standings with 17 points from 8 matches. They have won five and drawn two while losing one, which came against Espanyol.

Playing away from home, Madrid has won three and drawn one, but a 2-1 loss to Espanyol last time around throws question marks over their form.

Real Madrid Team News

Dani Ceballos and Gareth Bale are the long-term absentees for Real Madrid. Dani Carvajal and Eden Hazard are back to full fitness and may start on the bench.

Verdict

Barcelona have been inconsistent this season and injuries haven’t helped coach Ronald Koeman. Ansu Fati’s return to fitness and form is the only positive for the Camp Nou faithful, but otherwise there is gloom. Real Madrid also had tough times in the recent matches, but a win at Shakhtar should get things back on track.

I am backing this match to be a thriller with goals flying around. El Clásicos are tough to predict, but I see Real Madrid in a better shape at the moment to be front runners for a win. There is great value in backing Benzema to score first.
