Team GB vs Australia Women's Olympic Soccer Predictions

After topping Group E, Team GB face Australia with a semi-final place at Tokyo 2020 up for grabs.

Team GB went through the group stages undefeated, winning two games and drawing once in a group containing Canada, host nation Japan and Chile.

Australia finished in third spot in a group containing world champions the United States Sweden and New Zealand. It was a mixed bag of results for The Matildas and they are up against it against Team GB.

  • Team GB are undefeated with 2 wins and 1 draw (2020 Olympics).
  • Team GB have conceded 1 goal in 3 games (2020 Olympics).
  • Team GB's Ellen White has scored 3 goals in 3 games (2020 Olympics).
  • Australia won 1 of their 3 group games (2020 Olympics).
  • Australia's Sam Kerr has scored 3 goals in 3 games (2020 Olympics).

Head-to-Head

This will be the first time these two sides have met.

Team GB Form

Team GB have not put a foot wrong in this Olympic campaign, finishing top of Group E with two wins and a draw.

Team GB hit the ground running in their first Olympics since 2012 as they defeated Chile in their opening game 2-0 as Ellen White scored both goals.

Next up was the host nation and once again Team GB made light work of Japan, ending 1-0 winners with White scoring her third goal in two games.

Their last group match saw Team GB concede their only goal of the tournament to date as they drew 1-1 with Canada.

Team GB Squad and Team News

Goalkeepers: Ellie Roebuck, Sandy MacIver, Carly Telford
Defenders: Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze, Rachel Daly, Steph Houghton, Demi Stokes, Leah Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy
Midfielders: Sophie Ingle, Kim Little, Jill Scott, Keira Walsh, Caroline Weir, Niamh Charles
Forwards: Lauren Hemp, Fran Kirby, Nikita Parris, Georgia Stanway, Ellen White, Ella Toone

Team GB manager Hege Riise has had little to worry about in the group stages as they progressed undefeated. They should remain unchanged.

After a 2-0 win in their opening match, Riise made changes to the starting XI against Japan which saw Sophie Ingle and Keira Walsh start in a bid to stop Japan playing free-flowing football.

Australia Form

The Matildas finished the group stages as the third best team in Group G following a mix bag of results.

The Matildas began their group stage with a bang as they defeated Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand 2-1 to get things off to a perfect start. Star striker Sam Kerr netted both goals.

Any hopes of topping the group were quickly deflated as they went down to Sweden 4-2.

Despite the defeat, a draw was enough to see Australia through to the quarterfinals. That’s exactly what happened when they held the United States to a 0-0 draw.

Australia Squad and Team News

Goalkeepers: Lydia Williams, Teagan Micah
Defenders: Alanna Kennedy, Steph Catley, Clare Polkinghorne, Aivi Luik, Ellie Carpenter
Midfielders: Emily van Egmond, Tameka Yallop, Elise Kellond-Knight, Chloe Logarzo, Kyra Cooney-Cross
Forwards: Sam Kerr, Hayley Raso, Caitlin Foord, Emily Gielnik, Kyah Simon, Mary Fowler

There was only one change for the Australians against the USA as they were without star forward Caitlin Foord through injury.

Up stepped 18-year-old Mary Flower in her absence as she did a stellar job in the 0-0 draw.

If Foord is fit and ready it could create a welcome headache for coach Tony Gustavsson.
