Switzerland vs Turkey Tips

Switzerland are a tough side to beat. They should have enough quality to qualify from Group A in third place.

Turkey are on a poor run and have shown little attacking threat, so I am backing a Switzerland win and BTTS No.

  • Switzerland have won 6 of their last 8 matches (all competitions)
  • Switzerland have seen BTTS No in 2 of their last 3 matches (all competitions)
  • Turkey have lost their last 2 matches (European Championships)
  • Turkey have seen BTTS No in their last 4 matches (all competitions)

Head-to-Head

Turkey have an 8-4 advantage against Switzerland in 15 meetings with three draws.

Switzerland Form

Switzerland were unable to build on a 1-1 draw against Wales in their opening match. They fell to a 3-0 defeat against Italy on Wednesday and must win in their final Group A match to make the knockout stages.

Switzerland were on the back foot against Italy and conceded after 26 minutes. Another Italy goal came after halftime before Steven Zuber had Switzerland’s best chance of pulling a goal back, missing a one-on-one opportunity.

Vladimir Petković struggled to get back into the match, despite 51% possession. Italy added a third late on to end the Swiss' eight-match unbeaten run.

Petković’s side put together a six-match winning streak before the Euros that included wins against Euro competitors Ukraine (3-0) and Finland (3-2).

Switzerland Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Yann Sommer, Jonas Omlin, Yvon Mvogo
Defenders: Fabian Schar, Ricardo Rodriguez, Manuel Akanji, Nico Elvedi, Jordan Lotomba, Becir Omeragic, Silvan Widmer, Loris Benito, Kevin Mbabu, Eray Comert
Midfielders: Granit Xhaka, Xherdan Shaqiri, Steven Zuber, Denis Zakaria, Remo Freuler, Edimilson Fernandes, Djibril Sow
Forwards: Haris Seferovic, Admir Mehmedi, Breel Embolo, Mario Gavranovic, Ruben Vargas, Christian Fassnacht

First choice goalkeeper Yann Sommer could miss the final group game. He has flown to Germany for the birth of his child and Yvon Mvogo could start.

It is likely to be the only change to Petković starting XI. He has named the same line-up for both Euro 2020 fixtures, in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

Turkey Form

Turkey lost back-to-back matches for the first time since 2018 following a 3-0 defeat to Italy and a 2-0 loss against Wales in Group A.

The Crescent-Stars must win their final group match to stand any chance of qualifying for the knockout stages as one of the best-ranked third-placed sides.

Turkey have been disappointing in front of goal recently, failing to score in three of their last four in all competitions.

They were second best against Wales, despite 64% possession and 18 shots. Burak Yilmaz went closest, blazing a close-range effort over the bar early in the second half. Turkey were poor in defence too and had1.65 expected goals to Wales' 3.83.

Turkey have won twice in their last six matches; routine wins against Azerbaijan (2-1) and Moldova (2-0).

Turkey Squad & Team News

Goalkeepers: Altay Bayındır, Uğurcan Çakır, Mert Günok
Defenders: Kaan Ayhan, Zeki Çelik, Merih Demiral, Ozan Kabak, Umut Meraş, Mert Müldür, Çağlar Söyüncü, Rıdvan Yılmaz
Midfielders: Taylan Antalyalı, Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Halil Dervişoğlu, İrfan Can Kahveci, Orkun Kökçü, Abdülkadir Ömür, Dorukhan Toköz, Ozan Tufan, Okay Yokuşlu
Forwards: Muhammed Kerem Aktürkoğlu, Kenan Karaman, Enes Ünal, Cengiz Ünder, Yusuf Yazıcı, Burak Yılmaz

Senol Gunes made two changes against Wales, bringing in Cengiz Ünder for Yusuf Yazıcı in midfield. Centre back Merih Demiral was also dropped after a poor display against Italy with Kaan Ayhan the replacement.

Gunes is likely to stick with his rigid 4-1-4-1 formation. He may be tempted to tinker with the line-up again with star players Hakan Çalhanoğlu, Ozan Tufan and Burak Yılmaz struggling for form.

Verdict

Switzerland are in decent form and had good spells against Italy and Wales. Turkey are low on confidence and lack quality at both ends of the pitch.

I am backing a Switzerland to win 2-0 in Baku.
